About the position
This position is responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of a high-pressure heating plant consisting of three boilers up to 150 H.P. each. The incumbent selected for this position will work with the Chief Engineer, Trade Supervisors, Asset Managers, and tenant agency facility coordinators to ensure that heating, hot water generation and cooling are provided to the Capitol Campus 24 hours/day, 365 days/year. This position is responsible for ensuring that all work is performed in a safe, neat, and workman like manner, ensures work meets all state and local codes, and that all Powerhouse operations stay within permit values. The position is also responsible for monitoring the daily operations of the Capitol Lake Dam.

The ideal candidate for the Stationary Engineer 2 is a skilled journey-level operator that will maintain and operate the Powerhouse to provide steam for heating and hot water generation; and chilled water for cooling to the Capitol Campus facilities.

About the division
The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and DES managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, four state parks and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (custodial).

Some of what you will be doing
Powerhouse Operations
- Operate the high-pressure steam heating plant which provides steam heat, hot and chilled water to 13 buildings on the Capitol Campus. This includes, but is not limited to operation, maintenance, repairs and troubleshooting of the high-pressure stationary steam boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, compressors, condensers, steam and condensate return lines; steam traps, water lines, controls and meters
- Utilizes the Metasys central control system to make adjustments to the campus steam and chilled water systems
- Maintains boiler water and feedwater test and treatment
- Ensures that steam and chill water is produced to support all buildings that are supported by the Powerhouse
- Makes shift and work assignments to maintain Powerhouse coverage 24 hours/day, 365 days/year
- Monitor the lake levels and ensuring that the Metasys control system is operating the Capitol Lake Dam properly, ensuring that the lake is at acceptable levels at both high and low levels
- Notify DES supervision per written procedures of any unusual issues that could cause a flooding potential or an extreme low level of the Lake
- Receives, prioritizes and dispatches after-hours requests for DES services
- Works closely with the standby staff, evening and weekend custodians and WSP to identify response to calls received
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate or GED required.
- Three years of experience in operations, maintenance and repairs of high-pressure boilers and heating equipment
OR - Certificate of completion of an advanced Stationary and/or Marine Engineering course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college and two years of experience in the operation, maintenance and/or repair of stationary or marine high-pressure boilers and heating systems
OR - One year of experience as a Stationary Engineer 1 in state service
OR - Three years as a Steam Propulsion Engineer

- Ability to test and analyze operation of steam boilers and auxiliary equipment; instruct and supervise others; keep records; make written reports; perform heavy manual labor; work under and withstand extremes of temperature
- Knowledge and experience in chilled water plant operations and maintenance
- Can be relied upon to achieve excellent results with little need for oversite. Earns the trust, respect and confidence of co-workers and customers through consistent honesty, forthrightness, and professionalism in all interactions
- Ability to work independently with little or no on-site supervisory direction
