SUMMARY

The primary responsibility of this position is to investigate, design, survey, and stake electric distribution and transmission lines according to RUS and NESC construction specifications and prepare staking sheets.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Staking Engineer performs the duties listed below. These duties listed are not meant to be all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned from time to time in correspondence with the needs of the cooperative.

  • Meets with customers regarding new or extended service.
  • Designs and stakes overhead and underground primary line changes and additions, subdivisions, new services, and revisions of existing services.
  • Designs and stakes transmission lines.
  • Calculates/Prepares fees to be paid by the member for Aid-to-Construction and Deposits.
  • Inputs staking units, field notes and GPS data into staking software.
  • Works with developers/builders regarding service requirements.
  • Does necessary work to secure permits, easements and agreements to enable construction.
  • Conducts searches of city and county records to ascertain ownership of properties, and disposition of right-of-ways.
  • Negotiates with landholders to obtain easements.
  • Prepares, processes, and records easements.
  • Interprets company policy and terms of agreements for permits and easements to install facilities on property belonging to other parties.
  • Inspects for tree trimming and/or removal requirements, facility damages, and to identify potentially hazardous situations.
  • Participates in the Annual Meeting of the Members.
  • Assist in storm recovery efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates degree or equivalent experience.
  • Successful completion of college algebra.
  • Ability to read, generate and interpret a legal property description.
  • In depth knowledge of distribution and transmission line construction (depth of poles, installation angles, anchoring requirements, pole strengths, pole spans, sag characteristics and span limitations).
  • In-depth knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC) and National Electric Safety Code (NESC).
  • Knowledge of electricity and wiring practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable RUS construction standards and regulations.
  • Ability to negotiate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Computer proficient.
  • Commitment to customer-service. Must be courteous and act in a professional manner.
  • Must have valid Illinois driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. Other specific abilities required are ability to talk using radio and telephone and hear within normal range.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The majority of the work schedule will be performed traveling to and working at various field locations within the service territory with some office time each day. The employee is exposed to all four seasons and the effects of each including wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Some overtime may be required.
