Job description
Under the general supervision of the principal investigators, conduct studies with both transgenic mouse and rat models of Alzheimer's Disease. Participate in basic animal husbandry and behavioral testing. Assist with the collection of blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples, as well as euthanasia/perfusion/post-mortem brain collection. Prepare blood, CSF, and brain samples for biochemical and immunohistochemical analyses. Cut brain sections using a cryostat and perform immunohistochemical staining. Perform protein assays, Western blots, and ELISAs on processed CSF, blood, and brain samples. Supervise a Lab Helper. Perform basic data analysis; present work at lab meetings. Assist with laboratory management (i.e. ordering and paperwork). Conduct Statistical Analysis of Western Blot, water maze (retention, regression, latencies, path), Y maze (ratios), Novel Object Recognition, Barnes Maze. Design diet experiments and age dependent interventions and design and order diets. You will also supervise work study students and animal health technicians. Pay Range: $27.09 - $43.58 Hourly
BS in a biological or chemical science. (Preferred) Ability to work independently to carry out and troubleshoot experimental procedures and collect, analyze and present data. (Required) Demonstrated ability to work with and care for small rodents (mice and rats). (Required) Demonstrated ability to perform histological procedures. (Required) Demonstrated ability to perform biochemical analyses on rodent samples. (Required) Ability to perfuse animals, dissect CNS tissues and prepare them for analyses. (Required) Ability to assist with survival and non-survival procedures. (Required) Skill in reading and analyzing scientific journals to keep current in laboratory techniques and research protocols. (Required) Ability to tabulate results accurately and present them verbally in a comprehensive presentation to the principal investigator. (Required) Oral and written communication skills to provide information, instructions, training and advice. (Required) Knowledge of Mac and PC software programs. (Required) Ability to learn new software programs and laboratory techniques as needed. (Required) Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment, supplies, and animals to maintain inventory and stock. (Required) Working knowledge of pipettors, plate readers, vibratome/cryostat, microscope, gel apparatus, ELISA reader, centrifuge, sonicator. (Required) Supervisory skills to train, assign tasks and review work. (Preferred) Familiarity with Alzheimer disease and rodent models. (Preferred) Knowledge of University purchasing procedures and regulations. (Preferred) Possess excellent verbal and written English skills. (Required)
