Summary

This position offers an opportunity to have exposure and provide support to the asset management function. The Sr./ Investment Analyst will serve in a generalist capacity, focused on overseeing the fixed-income portfolio and actively contributing to the investment process. The position is a highly visible position within the Company that interacts with the CIO, members of senior management, and several internal constituencies across the organization in executing their job. The position's primary responsibility is evaluating and producing credit research for fixed-income holdings in the Company's investment portfolio. Responsibilities include supporting the oversight and management of the fixed-income portfolio, sourcing, and diligencing investment ideas, performing credit research, and assisting in the management of all internally driven portfolio positions. The individual will be keenly involved in the oversight of external fixed-income managers. The role will also support reporting and ad hoc research, evaluating alternative investments (private equity, private credit, and real assets), and investment income budgeting.

Essential Functions

  • Market Surveillance – Proactively follow markets and economic trends, contribute to idea generation and investment decision making and conduct financial analysis/research on issuers, sectors, asset classes, and ad hoc investment topics.
  • External Manager Monitoring – Oversight of existing external manager relationships and regularly assess results analytically. Review investment materials, monitor manager performance, and conduct regular calls or meetings with investment partners. Provide written documentation of manager meetings sharing fund updates and key insights amongst the investment staff.
  • Portfolio Surveillance – Support surveillance needs of the internally managed investment portfolio by supporting risk management, periodically evaluating credits, and performing quantitative analysis to help support buy and sell decisions.
  • Security Analysis and Credit Research – Assist with due diligence of potential new investments, including detailed analysis of the asset class, qualitative findings, and operational review. Support Senior PM with authoring investment memos and responding to requests for additional data or analysis.
  • Reporting and Presentations – Create and maintain high-quality risk reporting and presentation materials for regular internal discussions and ad hoc requests by senior investment staff. Provide staff support to the Chief Investment Officer for the Management Investment Committee and the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, including supporting the reporting needs and regularly presenting to these Committees.
  • Alternatives – Assist with oversight of the Company's alternative investments portfolio. This may include reviewing and due diligence support for new/existing investments and routine matters such as attending limited partners' meetings, tracking performance and distribution activity, and evaluating liquidity opportunities.
  • Maintain working knowledge of developments in the investment industry, including new products, accounting standards, and regulations.
  • Provide support to Accounting on all price and valuation related matters, including the CECL and OTTI process.

Knowledge & Requirements

  • Strong investment acumen skills, including proven analytical and problem-solving skills, and an attention to detail and process; Experience in investment manager due diligence, selection, and oversight; Experience researching or investing in broad range of investment asset classes / fixed income sectors.
    • Strong credit analysis skills, particularly as related to fixed income investments, and structured products, in particular.
    • Proficiency in conducting independent research analyzing financial statements.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Bloomberg, Intex, and BRS Aladdin.
    • Industry certification, such as the CFA and/or CAIA designation is a plus and investment experience within in an insurance company.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written), including.
    • Strong verbal and written presentation skills; Conducting asset manager interviews and diligence, managing managers, and cultivating relationships.
    • Networking within the investment and insurance community.
    • Writing investment recommendation reports and memos.
    • Team-oriented and an ability to work as an integral part of a team. Collaborate with investment team members and other internal departments, including Accounting, Enterprise Risk, Legal, Tax, and Treasury.
    • Regularly presenting to the Management Investment Committee and members of Senior Management.

Education & Experience

  • College degree or equivalent is required.
  • Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and/or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and/or Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation is strongly preferred.
  • Analyst role requires 2-3 years’ experience in investment management, with particular emphasis on fixed income and credit research. Senior Analyst role requires 5+ years.
  • Experience in insurance industry and knowledge of GAAP and Statutory accounting a plus.

Salary range: Analyst grade range $90,600.00 - $149,600.00. Senior level grade range $113,600.00 - $187,600.00. The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include the candidate's qualifications and experience.
