Job Description:

Pratt & Whitney is seeking a highly motivated individual to support the manufacturing maturation of Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) turbine components. CMCs are an enabling material that increases the temperature capability of jet engine components. Through successful development and application of these materials, P&W will deliver engines that are more fuel efficient, lighter weight and more durable for commercial and military applications. This position is located in Carlsbad, CA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage processes for applying Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBCs) to CMCs. This includes fixture and masking design and implementation, machine programming, deposition process parameters, and component pre-treatments required for highly durable coatings.

  • Work closely with manufacturing and engineering integrated teams to develop new processes and implement new designs into production, eliminating quality turn backs and escapes while reducing overall product costs.

  • Provide focused & effective leadership in eliminating EH&S/Ergonomics/Human Factors risks and addressing quality issues as processes transition into production.

  • Create and implement strategies for automation to improve quality and minimize process cost.

  • Identify & implement shop floor process optimization, control methods, and work instructions (including specifications, engineering changes, QAD/process control, and tooling definition/requirements.)

  • Lead the strategy for comprehensive data collection and analysis from this process that will support robust process development and understanding as part of the digital thread for CMCs. This includes establishing methods for data collection, data analysis and data visualization to enable Statistical Process Control (SPC)

  • Establish metrics for the process including yield, cost, cycle time, capacity, safety, delivery etc. Monitor outcomes to identify and implement improvement opportunities.

  • Lead the advancement of EBC Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) and support hardware production for Technology Readiness Level (TRL) demonstration.

  • Conduct root cause investigations as required and implement corrective actions.

  • Training of engineers and technicians

  • Monitor and improve OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) through implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) practices.

  • Identify, investigate, and implement new technology to address business goals.

  • Support a 24/7 operation as required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or ceramics and 5+ years of relevant experience, or
  • An Advanced Degree in a related field and 3+ years of relevant experience
  • US Citizen or US Person due to government contracts

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing new processes with successful transition to production.

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Experience operating coating equipment for processes like Air Plasma Spray (APS), Suspension Plasma Spray (SPS), Low Pressure Plasma Spray (LPPS), Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EB PVD) or other ceramic coating processes.

  • Working knowledge of tool design, fixture design and dimensional inspection approaches

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Working knowledge of quality and process improvement tools such as Six Sigma and LEAN

  • Ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships and exercise influence.

  • Ability to lead small teams to deliver outstanding results and overcome challenges.

  • Knowledge and effective practice of Environmental, Health and Safety requirements

  • Knowledge and effective practice of aerospace quality practices like AS9100 and/or ISO9001

Onsite:
Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance workers, as they are essential to the development of our engines.

Candidates will learn more about role type and current site status throughout the recruiting process. For onsite and hybrid roles, commuting to and from the assigned site is the employee’s personal responsibility.

The salary range for this role is 75,000 USD - 161,000 USD; however, Raytheon Technologies considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
