  VMware Service Provider & Edge Business Unit is looking for a highly motivated software engineer to join its product R&D team that is developing intelligent controllers and applications for 5G wireless networks, a.k.a. RICs and Apps.

  • The wireless industry is embracing open network architecture for 5G and beyond to facilitate interoperability and expedite innovations from all contributors. This role is an exciting opportunity to develop the intelligence for 5G wireless networks and make a lasting impact on society and industry.

  • In this role, you will implement cloud-native, service-based platform to provide fast and unified access to the rich data offered by the wireless networks, simple and secure interface to update the network configurations to improve the user experience and network performance. You will also design advanced data-driven intelligence, including AI/ML algorithms for 5G wireless networks, turn them into production-grade software applications, and work with cross-functional teams to deploy them in live commercial 5G networks across the world.

  Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • Within 30 days of joining, you will learn the RIC product architecture, understand the technical value of the product for mobile network operators and gain an appreciation for the critical role the intelligent platforms and applications play in 5G wireless networks.

  • Within 60 days of joining, you will be expected to understand some of the intelligent services and applications that the team has already developed through hands-on coding practices. You are expected to be comfortable with programming languages such as Python, Go, Java and/or C++. You will be expected to deliver simple bug fixes or small features to gain familiarity with the product R&D process.

  • Within 90 days of joining, you will be expected to contribute to the implementation and testing of new features in the platform or application. You will document your design in the functional specifications and perform unit/component tests to verify your implementation.

  • Within 180 days of joining, you will be expected to make your software commercial-grade and ready for release into production. You will be expected to address scaling, high availability, resiliency and ease of use. You will work with the rest of the R&D team and other cross-functional teams to drive the overall design, implementation, testing and release of your features.

  • Within 360 days, you will be expected to be a feature owner, the go-to person for the feature within the R&D engineering team, as well as across other teams including product management, field engineering, customer programs and sales/marketing. You will be ready to increase your scope of responsibility, contribute to product roadmap planning and shape the design and development of the product portfolio.

  
  The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  Your regular activities may be modified to suit your professional strengths, but you can expect a variety of the following assignments:

  • Implement intelligent platform services and applications for wireless networks. Be comfortable with developing software using Go, Java or C++, as well as processing data including AI/ML using Python frameworks. Experience on 5G is not mandatory, but knowledge or exposure to wireless technologies/networks is preferred.

  • Package the software into cloud-native services. Exposure to Kubernetes/Docker and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure is preferred, although not mandatory.

  • Collaborate with the rest of the R&D engineering team to develop carrier-grade software products. Collaboration skills and team-first attitude are required.

  • Understand standard specifications from 3GPP, O-RAN, etc and ensure full compatibility in design and implementation. Be comfortable with interface APIs with data representation in JSON, protobuf, etc. Be familiar with the workflow for data encoding/decoding and serialization/deserialization through communication interfaces.

  • Document design and best practices for developing and deploying product solutions.

  • Support integration with partner ecosystem. Back-office support for trial and deployment in customers’ networks.

  • Be comfortable working in an agile development process with continuous improvements.

  
  What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

  The hiring manager for this role is Yang Yang. Yang is a Senior Technical Manager for 5G Network Intelligence in VMware and leads a product R&D team that is responsible for developing intelligent algorithms, applications and services for 5G wireless networks. Yang is a recognized industry expert in mobile wireless networks. She joined VMware in early 2021 with over 20+ years of experience in Lucent Technologies, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia. Her team is based in the US and follows an open culture at work where everyone is encouraged to express their opinion, share knowledge and insights, learn from experience and grow together by team collaboration.

  
  Where is this role located?

  This team has been historically based out of VMware’s Palo Alto office. However, this role is open to fully remote. If you live in the surrounding area, you will have the option to work from the office partly or fully if you wish to do so.
