Social Worker, Senior Psychiatric - Prepetition Screening Program
Job description
The Prepetition Screening Program within Behavioral Health is seeking a mental health professional to fill the position of a screener who will evaluate individuals for civil commitment. Job duties include reviewing medical records; interviewing families, patients, and concerned persons; and writing court reports summarizing results. An important element of this position will be the capacity to perform intake functions for our program by gathering necessary documentation from referral sources, providing information regarding our process, and assigning cases for screening.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will work in Hennepin County community locations and remote as job duties require. Work hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in Minnesota or Wisconsin.
New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022, to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

In this position, you will:
- Conduct clinical interviews with clients and families to determine level of functioning and to diagnose mental and emotional disorders.
- Prepare clinical assessment reports based on a working knowledge of the Minnesota Commitment Act (Statute 253B), which include the presenting problems, psychosocial and medication history, psychiatric diagnosis, and treatment plans.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary staff conferences to determine the need for civil commitment.
- Confer and consult with professionals in community social service, mental health, educational, and other human services systems.
- Participate in court hearings and provide information regarding client status.
- Receive and process documentation and information that is necessary to initiate the screening process, via phone calls, email communication, fax, and medical information systems.
- Assign screening cases to professional staff, considering workload, staff availability, and specialized skills of staff members.
- Provide information and guidance to business partners and public regarding the civil commitment process.
- Master's degree or higher in social work or a closely related field and two or more years of post-master's degree experience in a psychiatric or mental health setting.
- Qualification as a Mental Health Professional as defined by the state of Minnesota.
- A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation to visit community sites throughout Hennepin County.
- Experience:
- Working in the areas of mental health and chemical dependency.
- Documenting and preparing clinical assessment reports.
- Providing court testimony pertaining to a client's mental health.
- Utilizing word processing applications, data systems, electronic data management, and electronic medical records.
- Knowledge of:
- Systems represented by our business partners, including medical providers, case management services, county attorney offices, and district probate court.
- Minnesota Statute 253B, which governs the civil commitment process.
- Resources available through Hennepin County and the community.
- Ability to:
- Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and foster a team environment.
- Establish effective therapeutic relationships with individuals in crisis.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff and professional agencies.
