Job Summary:
Performs underwriting functions to support Enterprise goals and objectives for new business and an assigned book of business. Underwrites a book of business based primarily on groups over 1,000 subscribers.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Evaluates risk and develops, reviews, and approves rates consistent with approved rating formulas and methodologies. Researches, reviews, and recommends improvements and enhancements to design of rating practices and guidelines.
Responds to inter-departmental requests and manages a book of business to ensure new sales, retention, and profitability expectations are met. Assists other underwriters in managing their books of business.
Develops and approves new business rates, proposals, and contracts for assigned book of business.
Develops and approves renewal rates and contracts for assigned book of business.
Creates and develops rating and underwriting reports and documents to support and assist internal departments.
Provides technical guidance in rating methodology, benefit plan design, contract language, bid responses, and other underwriting issues to internal departments.
Provides underwriting technical guidance and sales support to agents, brokers, consultants, and groups. Develops presentations, attends, and conducts at finalist meetings.
Develops, coordinates, implements, and leads underwriting programs and projects. Researches, negotiates, and resolves underwriting issues for complex groups, purchasing coalitions, and association business opportunities. Proficiently handles multiple segment complex groups. Meets internally and externally with management level staff.
Audits Underwriting staff for quality and effectiveness and meeting department goals.
Assists in providing training sessions for underwriting staff and sales and account management staff.
May develop and maintain dental and/or vision underwriting tools, guidelines, and rating factors.
May assist in developing an overall strategy to support growth in the dental and/or vision line of business.
Meets internal quality and turn around metrics.
Perform other related assigned duties as necessary to complete the Primary Job Responsibilities as described above.
Requirements:
Position requires a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field and five years of health underwriting and/or actuarial experience or seven years of underwriting and/or actuarial experience outside of the health insurance industry. Previous experience underwriting groups over 1,000 subscribers preferred. Will accept any suitable combination of education, training, or experience.
Position requires advanced knowledge of mathematical and algebraic theories and formulas, dental and/or vision terminology and procedures, dental and/or vision benefit administration, and word processing and spreadsheet applications; strong analytical skills; strong organizational skills; strong verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to present on behalf of the organization internally and externally; and the ability to resolve complex problems using independent judgment. Occasional travel is required.
