Security Threat Group Officer

SUMMARY:

The Security Threat and Intelligence Unit (STIU) is responsible for the identification, monitoring, and management of prison and street gang members incarcerated at the Irwin County Detention Center, while under United States Marshals Service custody.

The STIU gathers intelligence to proactively prevent violence at the West Texas Detention Facility and surrounding areas, to prevent and deter the introduction of dangerous drugs and contraband. The STIU serves as a liaison to nationwide corrections departments, probation parole divisions and to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The exchange of information and intelligence are daily aspects of the STIU staff duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Knowledge of the overall operation of the institution, agency and departmental organizational structure.

· Thorough knowledge of safe correctional operations and the ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

· Ability to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely, use of computers and related equipment.

· Prepare and maintain accurate records, files, and reports.

· Effectively coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.

• Supervise and provide custody and security of inmates including observation of inmates/detainees during activities and assigned to work duty.
• Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed. Provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skill, procedures and intervention techniques.
• Maintain accountability of staff, inmates/detainees and property; adhere to safety practices.
• It is expected that the STIU Officer shall also perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by the Warden.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Lifting and/or moving requirement, minimum 50 pounds
• Prolonged periods of standing, sitting and/or walking
• Capability to perform falling, bending and/or stooping
• Occasional kneeling, crouching and/or crawling
• Arm blocking and defensive techniques to control violent behavior
• Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision – naturally or with correctable lenses.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

· Two years correctional custody or law enforcement experience; no disciplinary in the past year.

· Security Threat Group (STG) experience preferred, but not required.
