Job Summary

LIGO Laboratory seeks a highly motivated and skilled Science Educator to join the outreach team at its Hanford Observatory outside of Richland, Washington.

The successful candidate for this position will work with two other full-time outreach staff members, and with university faculty, students, K-12 teachers, community members, and LIGO scientists to continue, and advance, an active and innovative scientific and educational outreach program.

LIGO Laboratory (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) seeks a highly motivated and skilled Science Educator to join its team. LIGO Laboratory is a National Science Foundation major facility dedicated to observing the newly discovered gravitational-wave universe. Jointly operated by the California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the LIGO Laboratory operates world-leading observatories near Richland, WA and Baton Rouge, LA as well as R&D centers on the Caltech and MIT campuses. The LIGO Laboratory's mission spans a broad and vibrant array of activities related to gravitational-wave physics and astronomy, including detector operations, R&D toward detector improvements, gravitational-wave astrophysics, observatory operations, and education and public outreach.

Essential Job Duties
  • Teach primary and secondary students about the physical science related to LIGO, using interactive programs, demonstrations and both static and interactive exhibits
  • Organize and lead student field trips and other events
  • Design, plan, and facilitate teacher professional development
  • Design NGSS aligned lessons that highlight LIGO science and engineering
  • Develop and manage educational programs with K-12 teachers and students
  • Collaborate with personnel in LIGO Hanford partner institutions to develop and advance programs supporting our shared goal, to improve science education in Washington State and beyond
  • Maintain and develop relationships with schools, teachers and allied organizations to improve our programs and to overcome barriers to their participation
  • Schedule and lead various tours including occasional public tours on Saturdays
  • Develop and host special public events on site, such as star parties and public lectures
  • Occasional travel will be required
  • Occasional nights and weekends are required

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering, Education, Informal Education or a related field
  • 2+ years working experience in public science outreach environment
  • Experience delivering astronomy related activities in an informal environment
  • Reliable transport to and from observatory, local schools, and presentation venues
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years working in public science outreach environment is preferred
  • Master's degree in Science, Engineering, Education, Informal Education or a related field
  • Bilingual
  • Experience working with diverse populations
