Position Summary

The Science Communication Associate is responsible for leading the daily and strategic communications and leading community communications and informal education and outreach.

The successful candidate will have experience in managing a suite of social media channels, using best practices and strategies to optimize reach. The candidate will have experience with science writing for both technical and non-technical audiences, including report writing. Duties also include highlighting science supported by the facilities and managing bibliographies of facility science. The successful candidate thrives in a team environment both working with individuals and broader groups throughout the organization. The position reports to the Vice President of Engagement.


Details of Responsibilities

General Essential Job Duties:


  • Recommend, implement and maintain website design and operation.
  • Responsible for maintaining dynamic and vibrant content on the website.
  • Assist with social media channels and content.
  • Responsible for implementation of communications strategy; assist with the development of annual communication implementation plans.
  • Write news items for broad distribution; examples of news items include community announcements, features of science discoveries, and highlights of EarthScope staff activities.
  • Write press releases.
  • Contribute to videos, animations and other digital content featuring geodesy and related geophysical concepts.
  • Maintain photo and video asset repository.
  • Lead efforts to translate materials into Spanish and other languages as needed.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations to promote better public understanding of geodetic science and geophysics.
  • Contribute to marketing and promotional materials, both print and electronic.
  • Work internally across programs to develop and revise outreach materials for stakeholders.
  • Assist with managing branding documentation and ensuring brand standards are met and used by staff.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary for the successful operation of the business.


Specialized Essential Job Duties:


  • Lead public facing elements of geophysical event response in coordination with technical staff.
  • Represent EarthScope at local outreach opportunities.
  • Coordinate outreach efforts in exhibition halls at scientific conferences.
  • Present at scientific and education meetings and conferences.


Leadership and Supervisory Responsibilities:


  • This position does not have supervisory responsibility.
  • Assist with leadership and managerial direction to interns and volunteers.
  • Work collaboratively and interact effectively and efficiently with EarthScope staff, community and partnering and external organizations.
  • Foster a professional culture through the use of strong interpersonal skills, verbal and written communications.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with other team members to ensure tasks are completed on time and with best practices.
  • Takes a leadership role in promoting and fostering an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion for the organization.


Qualifications


Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in geoscience, geology, communications, journalism, or related field
  • At least three (3) years of experience in media relations, journalism, science communications or related field.


Preferred Skills:


  • Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a Geoscience discipline with experience in secondary / college science classroom, professional development, or informal education.
  • Bilingual.
  • Experience in graphic design.
  • Experience in video production.
  • Scientifically literate in geosciences and geodetic science.
  • Familiarity with and experience with communications technologies in the areas of print graphics, web design and content, audio-visual presentation equipment, exhibition materials, or evolving social networks.

  • Ability to understand moderately complex problems, collaborate and explore alternative solutions.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work schedules for self and others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally technical topics to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing to create letters, reports and summaries.
  • Ability to compute, analyze and interpret numerical data.
  • Ability to make decisions which have moderate impact on the job function and the organization.


Other Requirements:


  • Appropriate availability consistent with EarthScope established practices and norms; hours may exceed 40 hours per week, particularly when traveling.
