Job Description
TITLE: ARMED SCHOOL SECURITY GUARD
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Current or prior ACT 120 certification in the State of Pennsylvania.
3. Act 235 certification and be able to handle firearms in a safe and proficient manner.
4. Certification in Basic NASRO School Resource Officer and Weapons Qualification completed prior to starting school-based, armed school security guard duties. (Candidates will be employed initially as school security staff until completion of required trainings, upon which they will be fully employed as armed school security guards. These required trainings will be paid by the District.)
5. Safe Crisis Management, CPR, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed may be required within six (6) months of employment.
6. Valid PA driver’s license and required to drive throughout the geographic area surrounding the District.
7. Compliance with employment eligibility, including all required background checks and sexual misconduct forms, physical examination and TB test standards.
8. Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
9. Ability to engage in the physical activities of a crisis intervention team member, including possible physical exertion.
10. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

JOB GOAL: To support school and District administration in maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students, staff, and visitors of the West Shore School District.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Elements:
- Read and abide by the Pennsylvania School laws and regulations, Federal and State laws, and regulations governing educational and civil rights of students and others, Child Protective Services Act, the policies of the Board of School Directors, administrative manuals, and the Non-Bargaining Support Personnel Handbook.
- Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing, with the administrative staff, professional and support staff, students, parents, and community.
- Perform routine safety and security duties at District facilities, including, but not limited to, surveying District buildings and grounds to identify unsafe conditions, possible security problems, or unauthorized persons.
- Patrol and monitor assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds, and parking lots to deter, detect, report, and stop violations of criminal law and/or school district policies.
- Assist administrators and local law enforcement officials in handling serious student offenses and criminal law violations.
- Establish and maintain a good rapport with students, staff, local Police Officers and community members.
- Relate to and function effectively with people of varying backgrounds and positions.
- Able to collaborate and work as a member of a team.
- Notify administrative staff, police, fire department, or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations as applicable.
- Detect, investigate, and address unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles, and activities.
- Assist administrators, staff, and emergency responders in crisis and emergency situations.
- Assist with the supervision and direction of student movement in both non-emergent and emergent situations (i.e. fire alarm activation, emergent evacuation, etc.).
- Stress safety of students and staff at all times and remain alert to dangerous or unusual situations.
- Maintain appropriate records (i.e. incident reports) as applicable to job duties.
- Complete assigned duties during school emergency drills.
- Assist the building staff through supervision and patrolling of special events and activities promoted by the District.
- Utilize technology (CCTV, Access Control, Two-Way Radio) as appropriate to aid in daily security investigations and functions.
- Assist administrators, as requested, in supervising or completing investigations relating to student violations of school policy.
- Assist faculty and administrators, who are the leads, with controlling classroom disturbances or acts of defiance. Request assistance from police when necessary.
- Assist administrators and local law enforcement in searches as requested or authorized to do so.
- Ensure all equipment (including, but not limited to, duty handgun, OC spray, flashlight, and Taser) assigned is accounted for and kept in a serviceable condition and all assigned firearms are clean and in good working order.
- Assist the Coordinator of Safety and Student Attendance with training of new District staff.
- Initiate and participate in activities designed to further the completion of approved District/building/personal goals and objectives.
- Ensure the highest degree of confidentiality appropriate to the position.
- Work the hours inherent to the position, including early morning, evening, and overnight as necessary, and/or in the case of emergencies as they arise.
OTHER:
- Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as from time to time may be assigned by the Coordinator of Safety and Student Attendance.
- Maintain positive relationships with community stakeholders.
- Contribute to the effective management of safety and security in the District in support of identified objectives.
- Possess and apply computer skills to the job and engage in repetitive hand movements as required for using the computer.
- Operate office machines, files materials in filing cabinets, and lift and carry up to, or occasionally in excess of, fifty pounds.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Extended School Year (200 days).
EVALUATION: Performance of the Armed School Security Guard will be evaluated annually by the Coordinator of Safety and Student Attendance in accordance with the approved Non-Bargaining Support Personnel Handbook.
RESPONSIBILITY LEVEL: Level 8
