SALES APPLICATIONS ENGINEER - Pumps, Motors, Controls
Job description
The Application Engineer is responsible for providing technical support and quotations with regards to the selection, price, design and delivery of critical water equipment to industry, municipalities and agriculture.
This role is for a detailed team player who will communicate and collaborate with outside business partners, internal teams, suppliers, factories, service shops, and bespoke job shop providers. Within your purview will be a team of industry experts, both in-house and nationwide, consisting of suppliers, product engineers, field service engineers, technicians, installers, and sub-contractors. All working together to meet or exceed customer expectations.
Daily projects include both replacement of complex equipment and design-bid-build projects of increasing size and complexity up to 500hp plus. Municipal spec work on a case-by-case basis and by proficiency.
Minimum Experience 3 years’ of recent experience in either Engineering, Technical Sales, or Construction Project Management...or combination thereof.
- Experience must include extensive work with at least one of our core groups of product:
- Lineshaft Turbine Pumps
- Industrial/Municipal Pumps
- VFD – Variable Frequency Drive Control Panels
- Industrial Automation (with pumping applications)
- Electric Motors
- Adding to your previous experience, you will Be or Become, an Expert in at least one of those products applications.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Extremely Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to understand and further your learning of pump hydraulics, mechanics, hydraulic design, electrical design, construction practices and process.
- Strong computer proficiency.
- Good math and engineering skills.
- Excellent interpersonal relationship building skills with strong verbal and written communication
- Strong ability to work with ambiguity, manage multiple projects at once, and to review technical documents.
- Eager to meet or exceed customer expectations, and achieve daily commitments.
- Strong nature to compete for and be awarded projects.
- General proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.)
- Ability to understand both customer and company interests and consider them both in a fair and reasonable standard.
- Ethical practices and behavior always.
NON-Essential, but preferred complementary skills:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, or business.
- Experience with public bid processes and municipal infrastructure projects.
- ADVANCED understanding of: pumps, construction, hydraulics, and application of rotating equipment, systems curves, wire to water efficiency calculations, integrated electrical controls, fluid and mechanical systems.
- Software Proficiency with: ERP’s, CRM’s, Adobe, AutoCAD (or other drafting tools), systems, and Pump Selection Software, and other equipment configurators.
- Ability to comprehend hydraulic motion, and its relationship to system performance.
- Understanding a chain of input/output system reactions.
- Ability to understand how complex automatic control valves operate and their performance within a system.
- Ability to read and understand electrical schematics.
Principal Details of Duties and Responsibilities:Customer Service
- Respond to customer inquiries quickly, effectively, accurately and professionally.
- Advise on best practices, products, services, and designs. These include: Reliability, Efficiency, Serviceability, Replacement Availability, Total Lifecycle costs and more. We are a trusted resource.
- Prioritize projects according to need, ability to execute, and ability to win.
- Be a voice of the customer, advocating for the customer’s needs.
- Relationship based selling is a core tenant of this position’s success.
- Customer satisfaction and retention.
Design and Quote
- Update and research recommendations for designs, product replacements or system improvements.
- Review product specifications and drawings to determine technical requirements, including but not limited to: equipment selection, sizing, costing, research requests for duplicate equipment from serial number records, and develop current pricing
- Select materials based on application and cost requirements.
- Provide optimal design selections from detailed customer requirements.
- Complies with construction codes.
- Communicate with suppliers for pricing, delivery, and technical information.
- Project pricing and lead time negotiations.
- Receive customer purchase orders for quoted projects and gather pertinent information for submittal creation and order execution.
- Produce detailed and concise work instructions pertaining to customer requirements, production, purchasing assistance, etc.
- Document communications regarding pricing, delivery schedule, preliminary design information, detailed review of customer specifications and statement of any bid exceptions to specs.
Effective Project Management
- Manage deadlines, identifying stakeholders, understand, communicate and achieve goals.
- Anticipation of issues, flaws, and requirements of system design, installation, and maintenance.
- Time management – Aptitude for effectively prioritizing tasks as the workload varies.
- Carefully review customer purchase order for compliance with our offer.
