Summary
The Safety Manager manages the department in an efficient and professional manner to successfully implement Safety programs in compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Develops strategic direction for improving safe work behaviors and practices to accomplish Business unit's health/safety goals and initiatives. Develops and anchors a safety work culture in both frontline and leadership. Interacts as necessary with both frontline employees and leaders to recognize and/or challenge work practices and behaviors to maintain a safety conscience work environment. Integrates the safety standards, requirements and practices in other related programs and activities to ensure consistent safe work practices and achieve the overall desired result. Leads and develops individuals and teams by using people management processes and tools that involve staffing, training, supervising, coaching and performance management to achieve optimal performance.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational/Industrial Safety, Loss Risk Management, Physical Science, Engineering, Environmental Studies or Business plus eight (8) years job related safety experience, of which three (3) years shall be supervision/management
- OR HS/GED plus ten (10) years job related experience, of which three (3) years shall be supervision/management
- Job related experience must be directly related to environmental, health, and/or safety profession, maintenance, project/work management, operations, engineering or emergency services.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with all levels of personnel and other departments.
Major Accountabilities
1) Develops and implements a comprehensive strategically-driven health and industrial safety program which includes an engaged workforce plan to anchor a safety conscientious work environment with desired results.
2) Selects and develops a high performing team through effective coaching, performance feedback, recognition, training and developmental opportunities.
3) Integrates industry safety standards, requirements and practices in other related programs and activities to ensure consistent performance of safe work practices.
4) Provides effective communications related to safety policies, procedures, standards and requirements to ensure an educated and well-prepared work force. Must possess excellent interaction, negotiation and conflict management skills to address challenges and short fall with safety compliance.
5) Advises leadership on developments and changes in safety regulatory and legislative requirements to minimize liabilities and adverse impact on employees and the Company.
6) Provides interpretation of new laws and regulations and develop implementation plans related to safety laws and regulations.
7) Influences the formulation of laws and regulations to the extent possible.
8) Interfaces with legal counsel, regulatory agencies and management to resolve potential compliance issues in a spirit of mutual teamwork and cooperation.
9) Supports departments on-site inspections and monitoring programs to ensure compliance.
10) Prepares, recommends and oversees development of operating budgets. Monitors spending adherence to budget; plans, develops and recommends plans to address variances.
