Position Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Since 1966, researchers at the Carolina Population Center have pioneered data collection and research techniques that move population science forward by emphasizing life course approaches, longitudinal surveys, the integration of biological measurement into social surveys, and attention to context and environment. We are also at the forefront of creating interdisciplinary training programs that integrate approaches from the social and biological sciences, building research capacity and training the next generation of scholars. Our faculty fellows address pressing research questions about population dynamics, fertility, health, mortality, migration, and the environment. Faculty come from multiple disciplines, benefiting from the cross-pollination of ideas. Our dedicated research and programming staff support fellows at every stage of project development, from conception through data collection or acquisition, analysis and dissemination, and project administration. https://www.cpc.unc.edu/about/

Position Summary
The Carolina Population Center has an opening for a research scientist to join the Bachpan project, a longitudinal birth cohort with an embedded cluster randomized control trial of a maternal depression intervention in rural Pakistan. The scientist will lead the Child Psychology knowledge cluster within the interdisciplinary team, complementing the existing disciplinary expertise of other team members. They will play a central role in data analysis, results dissemination, project implementation, and proposal writing to support Bachpan. The scientist will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Joanna Maselko, and a multi-disciplinary team of researchers to implement study goals through publishing manuscripts focused on maternal and child mental health, stress physiology, and adverse experiences, including COVID-19 related stressors. The scientist will also contribute to some administrative, personnel, and planning aspects of the project if needed.

Activities include:
1. Playing a key leading role in a complex portfolio of externally funded research projects in conjunction with an interdisciplinary team of researchers by leading the Child Psychology knowledge cluster.
2. Supervising and mentoring a team of undergraduate, graduate, and junior post-doctoral trainees as they conduct analyses, prepare manuscripts, and implement other project tasks.
3. Participating in a publication program for research papers in top peer-reviewed scientific journals. This includes conceptualizing and then leading the analysis and writing of multiple manuscripts, in addition to supporting other manuscripts in a co-author role.
4. Representing the Bachpan study through presenting results to a wide range of national and international audiences, especially ones focused on child development/psychology.
5. Working with a team to develop and execute a strategy for obtaining external funding for projects from federal agencies including NIH. This includes leading grant proposals in the principal investigator role in addition to participating in collaborative roles.
6. Managing administrative aspects of the project, including supervising other project staff.
