Position: RN : Medical-Surgical
Reports To: Director of Nursing
Schedule: Full Time Nights

Job Summary: Med-Surg. RN will report and be accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing for patient management and keep oversight of Med-Surg. department while collaborating with physicians, CNAs, and other relevant departments to ensure patient care. Advocate and support quality improvement, patient safety, and infection control initiatives. Interact, assess and provide treatments and patient education about their medical condition, medications, and discharge instructions, including following-up with primary care providers. Act as a liaison with other departments or medical facilities for support of Med-Surg. operations. Ensure patient information and rights are protected during patients' visit/stay per HIPAA regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Willing and able to work shoulder to shoulder with other departments and positively engage physician staff as well as CNAs
- Monitor/anticipate activities during daily operations, emergency situations, and transfer of care to higher/lower level institutions
- Practice critical thinking and quickly adjust to medical conditions of arriving patients; maintain high expectations for self and team
- Regularly participate in training and maintain high level of professional competency needed to deliver the expected quality of care
- Possess and demonstrate effective communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills with attention to detail
- Capable of applying new standards of care consistent with evidence-based care
- Set expectations through applying measurable goals/objectives and holds mutual accountability for progress amongst the team
- Able to meaningfully and positively engage physician staff and delegate CNA duties to provide excellent patient care
- Addresses patient concerns per patient care policies, protocol and procedures
- Develop ways to improve and streamline patient flow and identify process improvement initiatives
- Understand and apply hospital policy and procedures and identify ways to improve policies through experience and observation
- Part of a team of enthusiastic nurses that strive to achieve and excel at providing the level care and patient (and family) service that will distinguish the function of the department
- Understands meaningful use, proficient with electronic medical records; able to train staff for effective charting and charges
- Assists in identifying resources based upon patient needs, acuity, care plans, protocols, and cost
- Assures M/S services are following current standards established by the HFAP, CMS, and other regulatory agencies
- Seeks out and participates in professional development programs; Adaptive to the changing environment of nursing practice
- Participates on committees as assigned for purposes of developing and implementing standards for quality of nursing services
- Monitors use of supplies and services to maximize department’s available resources based on budget planning
- Ensures daily charges are captured and reported for hospital revenue
- Supports good staff coverage and adjusts quickly to short notice staffing deficiencies. Willing to adjust work scheduling on occasion to meet organization needs and to ensure safe patient care staffing
- Participate in annual personnel evaluations and ensures annual competencies are completed within established timelines
- Prepare occurrence reports in accordance with Risk Management protocol and policies whether they be patient, family, or visitor
- Continually monitor patient satisfaction and investigate ways to improve the level of satisfaction
- Demonstrate ability to use all channels and proper methods of communication to address concerns, problems, and conflicts with other peers and departments
- Respects the chain-of-command, is punctual, and willing to assist other departments
- Checking hospital email at least once per workday as this is a primary source of communication
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Education, Experience and Other Requirements:
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with an associate or bachelor's degree in nursing
- Current license to practice as RN in the State of Michigan and is in good standing with the licensing board (required)
- Basic experience in medical/surgical, acute patient care setting, or critical care nursing (preferred)
- BLS
- Able to pass health/drug screening as required by federal guidelines for all healthcare workers
