Job Supervisory Responsibilities: None

General Summary: A nonexempt position responsible for administering radiation treatment to patients under the direction of a radiation oncologist.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

1. Prepares exam room and equipment. Explains procedure to patient. Takes medical history information if needed.

2. Uses an X-ray imaging machine to pinpoint the location of the tumor and/or computerized tomography (CT) scan to help determine how best to direct the radiation to minimize damage to healthy tissue. Positions patient and adjusts the linear accelerator to concentrate radiation exposure on the tumor cells following the treatment plan developed in conjunction with radiation oncologist. Explains procedure to the patient. Performs dosimetry procedures.

3. Delivers accurately the prescribed planned course of radiation therapy. Monitors patient’s physical condition during treatment phase to determine any adverse side effects. Documents all pertinent information in medical record including dose of radiation used for each treatment, total amount of radiation used to date, area treated, and patient’s reactions.

4. Performs daily linear accelerator warm-up procedures. Checks photon beam and all electron beams for consistency. Checks physics components for accuracy of beam alignment.

5. Cares for brachytherapy sources including preparing for use, cleaning and returning to safe, keeping log of use.

6. Follows radiation safety protocols in competent manner.

Education: Successful completion of an associate's or bachelor’s degree program in radiation therapy or a radiography program, plus a 12-month certificate program in radiation therapy.

Experience: Minimum two years of experience as staff radiation therapist in radiation center, preferably in clinic setting.

Other Requirements: Some states require state license. Also required by some states and employers is certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

Performance Requirements:

Knowledge:

1. Knowledge of radiation therapy theory and applications.

2. Knowledge of radiation safety protocols.

3. Knowledge of dosimetry and treatment planning.

Skills:

1. Skill in effectively performing radiation procedures, particularly safety procedures.

2. Skill in explaining radiation plans and treatments to patients and their families.

3. Skill in identifying unsatisfactory set-up situations and/or errors and reporting them to radiation oncologist.

Abilities:

1. Ability to observe and deal competently and compassionately with patient’s emotional condition, maintaining a positive attitude and providing emotional support.

2. Ability to collaborate effectively with health care team.

3. Ability to demonstrate manual/finger dexterity, eye–hand coordination, and agility for use with equipment.

Equipment Operated: Radiation equipment and related items such as treatment table. Computer hardware and software for documentation purposes.

Work Environment: Medical offices and exam rooms. Clean, well lighted, and well ventilated. Exposure to radioactive materials and communicable diseases.

Mental/Physical Requirements: Considerable standing (four to six hours per day), walking, sitting, and stooping. May need to help transfer patients and lift/carry equipment weighing 75+ pounds. Stress related to need for safety and accuracy and dealing with anxious patients.

Experience:

• Radiation therapy: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification:

• BLS Certification (Preferred)
