The Radiation Health Physicist 2 drafts radioactive air emission licenses and conducting compliance inspection of radioactive air emission units. This involves reviewing applications to construct, drafting the approval to construct and license to operate, conducting inspections to identify air emission issues, assuring corrective actions are taken, and reviewing air emission reports.

You’ll use your professional experience and education to make judgment-based decisions that protect the public from sources of radioactivity and ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations and standards. This position contributes the Department of Health’s mission by assuring emissions of radioactive material is kept as low as reasonably achievable.

This is a full-time permanent position.

The duty station for this position is in Richland, WA. Telework (mobile work) is currently expected. When approved, the incumbent is expected to report to the duty station for work activities. Partial telecommuting may be an option subject to supervisory approval. It is anticipated that the incumbent would be expected to at the Richland, WA duty station for work activities 2-3-days weekly.

Duties Include
  • Conducting inspections and investigations to verify compliance with chapter 246-247 WAC alone or with another staff member.
  • Reviewing existing license and past inspections to determine emission unit requirements and history.
  • Developing inspection checklists.
  • Making the initial determination of enforcement actions and providing recommendations to Radiation Health Physicist 3 and Section Supervisor.
  • Entering inspection reports in Radioactive Air Emissions Section (RAES) Database using agency standards for data entry.
  • Independently reviewing radioactive air emissions applications for construction and operation of emission units; draft approvals to construct and licenses to operate.
  • Reviewing applications to determine compliance with the regulations, including Best Available Control Technology and As Low As Reasonably Achievable Control Technology.
  • Providing coaching/technical assistance to licensees in meetings, in person, or on the phone.
  • Reviewing facility annual reports to verify required elements are included in the report.

Required Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree or higher in physical science, engineering, or biological science.

One (1) or more years of experience in a radiation control program; or two (2) or more years in another air pollution regulatory control program.

Special Requirement: Within six (6) months of hire, and annually thereafter, must successfully pass Hanford's General Employee Training (HGET) and achieve and maintain access to the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Reservation.

Desired Qualifications
Experience with federal (40 CFR Part 61) and state (chapter 246-247) radioactive air emissions requirements.
Experience with radioactive licensees within the state of Washington.
