Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
In this role, you will be joining the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory. Our mission is to push the frontiers of materials and structures with applications such as commercial and military aircraft, hypersonics and automotive. This position is for research and development of new composite materials and fabrication processes, including digital manufacturing. Opportunities abound for a self-driven and creative engineer to grow within our group.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Setup and operate equipment to fabricate composites
  • Characterize and analyze composites
  • Test resin and polymer properties (rheology, differential scanning calorimetry, etc.)
  • Test mechanical properties (tensile testing, flexure testing, etc.)
  • Work with outside vendors for special tests or analyses
  • Summarize key findings in written documents and slides
  • Work effectively on a team as well as independently.

EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
  • The candidate should have experience with materials processing or fabrication of components.
  • Hands-on experience with composite fabrication is a plus
  • CAD experience (e.g. Solidworks or Inventor)
  • Design, procurement and build of custom hardware
  • Installation of sensors and implementing data acquisition systems
  • Collection, processing and analysis of experimental data
  • Experimental laboratory experience.
  • Experience with Matlab or Python

EDUCATION DESIRED:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, materials, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering or related discipline.
Candidates with additional experience may be considered for more advanced positions.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be familiar with safe chemical handling practices and common laboratory safety procedures. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment. Ability to work independently is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required. Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance is a plus.

Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $60,000 - $101,000 + bonus + benefits.
Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
