Job description
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Department of Human Services (DHS) merged on July 1, 2022, to form one agency, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). We are seeking a Psychiatrist to join the team at the Independence Mental Health Institute (IMHI). This is a full-time position with opportunity for advancement, growth and development.
The hospital and the community:
The Independence Mental Health Institute (IMHI) provides inpatient psychiatric treatment for adults, adolescents, and children. The hospital’s mission is to treat Iowans with psychiatric illness and return them to their communities as soon as possible. The hospital serves patients from throughout the state of Iowa. IMHI is operated by the State of Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and has been an important provider of mental healthcare services since May 1, 1873.
IMHI is located in Independence, Iowa, a city that invites residents to “celebrate our spirit” and boasts “America’s fame is in our name.” Independence is located on Highway 20 and is just a short drive from the cities of the Cedar Valley corridor – Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. Independence is 30 minutes from Cedar Falls, home of the University of Northern Iowa Panthers, 45 minutes from Cedar Rapids and 1 hour from Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. The Wapsipinicon River runs through the center of this tranquil community and provides the backdrop for many recreational activities and the annual Fourth of July Celebration. The position is ideal for a physician who loves the less-stressful lifestyle of small-town living with an abundance of outdoor sports such as hunting, fishing, hiking, etc. and who also wants to be close to larger metropolitan areas for cultural, educational and other social activities.
Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team in collaboration with other physicians, mid-level providers and other health team members. A psychiatrist is the clinical leader of the interdisciplinary team of highly skilled professionals.
Provide advanced clinical practice to individuals, groups and families; conduct ongoing assessment including health and developmental history, psychosocial history, physical examination and diagnostic tests.
Review, evaluate and document patient response to care; assess patient medical/nursing educational needs and provide both formal and informal teaching; effectively involve patient, family and significant others in plan of care.
Fulfill a 40-hour per week position with on-call responsibilities.

Graduation from an accredited school of medicine, completion of an internship program and licensure as a physician by the State of Iowa.
