The Protein Biochemist is responsible for the production of various proteins and their conjugation as well as antigen production and maintenance for downstream manufacturing, finished good catalog items, and custom orders in accordance with Quidel’s Quality System Regulations. Position works with moderate supervision from supervisor on production requirements below.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- All duties required by Protein Biochemist I and is familiar with most of the product families and their requirements.
- Assists in the production of critical rare reagents, under the direction of management.
- Assists in validation process, under direction of management, for product design and improvement processes.
- Assists in the product investigations, under the direction of management, for customer complaints and production issues.
- Performs assay analysis, proposes assessment of results and provides testing summaries for inclusion in reports for activities listed above.
- Participates in training of Protein Biochemist I by providing hands-on examples of manufacturing and assay methods and auxiliary guidance to trainee for clarity of procedure requirements.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Mastered Skills required: single-step antibody purifications, small-scale and single-step conjugations, and hybridoma cell culture.
- Skills to be acquired: multi-step and large-scale antibody purifications, medium-scale biotinylations, multi-step complex conjugations, single-step protein and bone marker purifications, and large-scale cell culture.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a biology, biochemistry, chemistry or other related science field with 2-year specific laboratory experience outside course work.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered if related and applicable to job requirements.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Strong core competency in biochemistry, microbiology and protein engineering and purification
- Ability to set-up custom spreadsheets and analysis templates in various data analysis or equipment software for daily examination, interpretation and trend identification to determine suitable progression of production timeline.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques to support process improvement and product development activities for new and existing products with a focus on improving yields and cost reduction.
- Proficient at sustained communication with supervisor and cross functional teams on daily production progress and key project initiatives. Expertise in project organization and time management will be key for production success.
- Compliance procedures defined by a set of standards regulated by requirements from FDA, any export countries and ISO organizations
- Must be able to work under moderate to minimal supervision
