Job description
Brunswick County Government is looking for a full-time Project Planner to join our Planning Department. The Brunswick County Planning Department provides public planning services to unincorporated areas of the county that are outside other municipalities’ planning jurisdiction. Services include zoning, subdivision of land, long-range planning, transportation planning, specialized projects, etc.
The Project Planner will mainly focus on current planning related issues regarding site plans, plats, development projects, and permits. Responsibilities include:
- receiving, accepting for filing, and processing planning related applications and requests.
- reviewing site plans and development applications to ensure compliance with the Brunswick County Unified Development plan and other planning related procedures, regulations, and policies.
- providing technical assistance to internal and external customers while administering planning programs and ordinances.
- assisting in resolving citizen and customer issues.
- preparing charts, maps, plans, tables, etc. to support planning projects.
- conducting site inspections and field visits to ensure compliance with zoning and approvals.
- writing ordinances and regulations, reports, recommendations, etc.
- making public presentations and presenting oral reports to community groups.
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), high attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while exercising good judgement are required. This position reports directly to the Planning Director.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in planning, urban studies, geography, natural sciences, architecture, or a closely related field, AND demonstrated knowledge of/experience in planning is required; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Experience with GIS applications and two (2) plus years of experience in planning, plan reviews, zoning administration, and/or GIS is preferred.
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, typewriters, blue line map machines, drafting supplies, calculators, cameras, copiers, facsimile machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are for those for Medium Work.
