Mighty Writers is a nonprofit that teaches kids, seven to seventeen, to think and write with clarity. Our free, out-of-school writing programs have grown to serve 3,500 kids a year. We operate in Philadelphia, PA; Chester County, PA; Camden, NJ; Atlantic City, NJ; Newark, NJ; and Washington Heights, NY.

Position Description

The Program Manager, MW Germantown reports to the Education Director. The position is threefold: the Program Manager will recruit and retain families and children in programs, manage multiple contracted educators and their programs, and teach a minimum of twice/week. The Program Manager will work alongside the Education Director as they facilitate community partnerships and provide project updates. The Program Manager will establish, maintain and teach a rigorous workshop program, supported in some part by a volunteer program.

The successful applicant will be entrepreneurial: able to build unique programs, to be accountable and to take ownership of program results. They will have high expectations for students, will work well with diverse constituencies and will have a good rapport with people of all ages and backgrounds, including children, teenagers, parents and volunteers. They will be self-motivated, work well under pressure and be able to handle several projects at one time.

The Program Manager will have deep ties to the Germantown community, good judgment and an eye for detail as well as the ability to see the big picture.

General Responsibilities

· Leverage deep ties in the Germantown community to promote Mighty Writers, attract participants and build community advocates for our organization.

· Manage many aspects of site such as these daily activities:

o Be present to provide consistency and positivity for all on-site programs,

o Recruit, train and manage volunteers and interns to support a positive and productive program environment,

o In collaboration with the education director, oversee program content and initiatives,

o Coordinate program registration and evaluation,

o Respond to site phone calls and email inquiries,

o Manage snack program for program children, and

o Lead all community members (staff, volunteers, youth) in keeping site clean and tidy.

· Be self-motivated and work well under pressure,

· Manage multiple people-focused scenarios with good judgement and mature responses,

· Report on the state of all site education programs to the education director weekly,

· Have a good rapport with people of all ages and backgrounds, including children, teenagers, parents and volunteers,

· Propose and build unique programs in response to our neighborhood and community,

· Have high expectations for all youth and

· Be accountable and to take ownership of program results.

Administrative / Teaching Responsibilities

· Design, deliver & manage daily afterschool program for 15-20 elementary or middle school youth, in collaboration with the education director and volunteers, including:

o Homework help, supported by volunteers

o Outside play

o Community-building exercises

o Social-emotional Learning lessons, in collaboration with MW’s director of social-emotional learning and

o Daily writing workshops.

· Be a liaison to MW’s volunteer team to explore the possibility of MW Germantown launching our mentorship program.

· Delegate tasks and responsibilities to volunteers and interns to ensure the continued success of all active programs.

· Be one of the public faces of the organization and represent Mighty Writers to the media, other organizations and the public at large.

· Remain knowledgeable and informed regarding any issues, regulations or professional standards that may impact Mighty Writers’ policies or operations.

· Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent or sensitive information.

Skills, Education and Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in Education, Arts Administration, Liberal Arts, History, English, Social Work, or Public Administration (preferred, but not required); and/or 2 years’ equivalent prior experience,

· Minimum of 2 years of direct experience working with youth in an educational environment,

· A strongly held educational philosophy of how to inspire kids to write and succeed,

· Strong skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening

· Strong organizational, time management and computer skills and

· Interest, enthusiasm and affinity for working with children, youth and adults.

  • Weekend availability

Applicants must provide proof of full covid vaccination as a part of the vetting process. All staff and volunteers 18+ are vaccinated against Covid-19. Masks may be required in all indoor settings and some outdoor settings.
