Principal Reliability Engineer - Product Safety and Reliability Engineering (Hybrid)

Hybrid: Employees who are working in Hybrid roles will work regularly both onsite and offsite. Ratio of time working onsite will be determined in partnership with your leader.

The selected candidate for this position will work directly with Collins Aerospace customers, partners (suppliers, contractors and subcontractors), and regulatory authorities. The selected candidate will analyze parts, components, Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), Orbital Replacement Units (ORUs) or Systems to determine potential safety-critical failures, hazards and the associated Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) and/or Reliability of Government Furnished Equipment (GFE).

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing Space Mission Systems Safety, Reliability and Maintainability services and products required for various vehicles including, Space Flight Vehicles (such as Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), International Space Station (ISS), ORION, and other deep space missions, etc. throughout their complete life cycle (cradle to grave). This will encompass tasks such as developing and or reviewing Program level products as System and Subsystem Requirements Review (SRR and SSRR), Interface Definition Document (IDD), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA), Critical Item List (CIL), Hazard Analysis (HA), Non Conformance Reports (NCR), Failure Investigation Analysis Reports (FIARs), Reliability Predictions, Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA), The position requires the capability to identify and suggest mitigation strategies for potentially eliminating, reducing or controlling critical failures, safety hazards and risk.

Additionally, the Principal Product Safety and Reliability Engineer will actively participate in Technical Interchange Meetings (TIM), Working Groups (WG) (such as Reliability & Maintainability Working Group (RMWG), etc.), Review Boards such as Extravehicular Activity (EVA), Change Control Board (CCB), Fracture Control Board (FCB), Safety and Mission Assurance Control Board (SMACB), Materials Review Board (MRB), Panels such as EMU Panel, Safety Review Panel (SRP), Space Station Program Control Board (SSPCB), Certification of EVA Readiness (CoER), and status meetings representing System Safety. Ability to provide technical presentations to all levels of management and external customers such as NASA SRP is essential for this position.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop knowledge of NASA Safety, Reliability, Maintainability and Quality Documents is required: NSTS 5300.4(1D-2) “Safety, Reliability, Maintainability and Quality Provisions for the Space Shuttle Program”, NSTS 22206 “Requirements for Preparation and Approval of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEAs) and Critical Items List (CIL)”, NASA-STD-8729.1 “Planning, Developing and Managing an Effective Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) Program”, SSP 50021 “Safety Requirement Document International Space Station Program”, SSP 30234 “Failure Modes and Effects Analysis and Critical Items List Requirements for Space Station” and SSP 30599 “Safety review Process”.
  • Familiarity with data mining and analysis utilizing NASA and Industry databases and tools such as Certification Data System (CDS), Electronic Document Management System (EDMS), Problem Reporting And Corrective Actions (PRACA), Problem Analysis Reporting Tool (PART), Systems Analysis Programs for Hands-on Integrated Reliability Evaluations (SAPHIRE), PTC Windchill Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Computer-Aided Fault Tree Analysis (CAFTA) Platform, Reliability Information Analysis Center (RICA), Lambda Predict, Time-Dependent Reliability Predictions using the Block Diagram (RBD) Methodology, and Quanterion Automated Databook systems for Failure History and Reliability Analysis is required
  • Experience in performing complex Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Investigation and Hazard Analysis (HA).
  • Strong organizational skills to lead, manage and bring structure along with clarity to dynamic and ambiguous situations.
  • Outstanding people skills in order to develop teamwork and collaboration among all parties., internal and external customers.
  • Strict adherence to Collins Aerospace Code of Ethics and handling of sensitive information

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years experience OR In absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required
  • Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident “Green Card” holder
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills using standard tools such as presentations, memos and reports
  • Strict adherence to Collins Aerospace Code of Ethics and handling of sensitive information
