Power Electronics Engineer
Job description

Emerging areas of focus include metal additive manufacturing, blockchain for supply chain, sensor integration, and propulsion test facilities.
Moog is looking for a Lead Power Electronics Engineer to join the Engineering department at the Blacksburg facility,
located at 1215 North Main Street, Blacksburg, VA 24060.
Job Responsibilities
This position is responsible for circuit-level design, simulation, and troubleshooting in support of power supply and inverter applications. Applications are highly varied, from low-voltage, low-power Point of Load supplies for the electronics boards embedded in our products to high-power resonant converters for our next generation Non-Contacting Power Transmission systems. Applications range from 10W to 10kW+.;
Current project portfolio includes High Efficiency Resonant architectures for wireless power transfer, Wide bandgap power converters in various AC/DC, DC/DC and bidirectional applications including Generator power Converter, Gimbal motor drive, etc.
- Requires work in a team environment consisting of firmware, PCB, mechanical designers and working closely with project managers.
- Manage products from concept to production within tight schedule constraints and requires support of products through the complete life cycle.
- Direct small team on Power electronics projects.
- Read and interpret customer specifications and understands how the specification applies to the electronics
- Uses strong thermal design skills to select component packages and design appropriate thermal interfaces
- Circuit design for electro-magnetic interference and susceptibility attenuation
- Select/analyze/test/document electronic component suitability in support of new product lines and existing product lines
- Design, Simulate and prepares schematic design of circuitry for Power Electronics systems Magnetics design and evaluation (transformers, inductors)
- Development of prototype tests and the testing of prototype power electronics systems and controls which include (but not limited to):
- Performance testing to specification
- Thermal characterizing of systems
- Power analysis
- Reliability testing, Noise testing, Environmental testing
- Provides technical support for prototype builds.
- Analyzes failed units from internal manufacturing and in the field.
- Evaluates customer returns and line rejects to determine the root cause, and the design and development of dedicated test equipment for testing power transfer systems and electronics boards.
- Oversees preproduction builds of Power Electronics systems
- Assists purchasing department in selecting suitable suppliers.
- Direct outside activities such as regulatory or other third party testing.
- Provide field support and visit customers on an as needed basis.
- Work with CPES at Virginia Tech to stay on top of technology advancement
- Other tasks as required
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in EE or similar is required with a minimum of 7 years of power electronics experience.
- This position requires access to U.S. Export Controlled Information.
Ideal candidate would have experience in the following areas.
- Schematic generation
- Circuit/subcircuit analysis
- Control loop analysis and design
- Microprocessor Control
- Matlab simulation
- Analysis and design of DC/DC circuits
- Analysis and design of power factor correction circuits
- Ability to document technical information, such as engineering reports MS Word, MS Excel, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree with emphasis in Power Electronics with a minimum of 4 years of power electronics experience is preferred.
- Regulatory environment (UL, CE)
- Software Repository usage for code development
- Qualification of design through regulatory channels (i.e. UL, CE, etc).
- Qualification of design to objective standards (i.e. DO-160, MIL 417, etc.)
