We are experiencing massive growth, and this is your opportunity to make a big impact!The Patent Agent will lead the evaluation of intellectual property protection strategy including patents, copyrights, and trademarks.
Work Schedule: This position is in Irvine, CA and will require minimum 3 days onsite per week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the preparation of patent applications between R&D inventors and outside patent counsel; Partner with outside patent counsel in the preparation of such applications.
- Draft and prosecute worldwide patent portfolios
- Engage with R&D, engineering services, marketing, and product management to sense and capture new innovation
- Review and provide technical guidance on invention disclosures for patentability
- Prepare for and run manage Patent Review Board meetings to evaluate inventions and determine what should be submitted as patent application
- Provide patentability, landscape, and competitor analyses as it relates to patent procurement activities
- Conduct patent searching as requested by supervising attorney to: product development including design-around activities, right to use / freedom to operate (FTO) matters; and identify and evaluate potential infringement concerns, validity and competitiveness
- Advise and educate internal clients regarding IP-related issues, including new developments in patent and trade secret laws and policies
- Plan patent activities and due diligence efforts with accountability for successful completion within scope of deliverables
- Other incidental duties
- Bachelor's Degree
- 6+ years of patent experience and protecting technologies (e.g., drafting and prosecuting patent assets, conducting patent analysis, and/or providing support for open source, standards, transactions, and litigation efforts)
- Relevant experience at a top law firm and/or in-house legal department
- Master's degree, a minimum of 4 years of experience stated above is required with a Master's degree
- Experience in life sciences industry
- Proven expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and related systems and/or tools
- Proven successful project management skills
- Excellent documentation and communication skills and interpersonal relationship skills including negotiating and relationship management skills with ability to drive achievement of objectives
- Strict attention to detail
- Ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels and proactively escalate issues to appropriate levels of management in the organization
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced environment
- Work is generally self-guided with input from stakeholders with adherence to established patterns and practices
- Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignment in own team
- Decisions impact small team Erroneous decisions or recommendations or failure to achieve results might cause delays in schedules and require the allocation of financial resources
- Ability to represent leadership on sections of projects within a specific area interfacing with project managers and team
- Ability to consult in project setting within specific sections of area
- Develops solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and innovation; ensures solutions are consistent with organization objectives
- Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
For California, the base pay range for this position is $106,000 to $151,000 (highly experienced).
The pay for the successful candidate will depend on various factors (e.g., qualifications, education, prior experience).
