Salary: $1,646.99 - $1,679.93 semi-monthly *Salary may be commensurate of education and/or experience

Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks, and will be located at Nathan & Olive Boone Homestead State Historic Site, 7850 N. State Hwy V, Ash Grove, 65604. Position will work Wednesday-Sunday, 8am-4:30pm with Monday & Tuesdays off. Schedule will allow for one weekend off per month. Must have ability to work occasional evenings, holidays, and occasional overnight stays.

Nathan & Olive Boone Homestead State Historic Site preserves one of the last places visitors can experience 19th century Missouri frontier life. No two days are ever the same, you may spend one day leading tours and the next day you’ll be assisting with a prescribed fire. The historic site features the 1837 Boone Home, 2 historic cemeteries, four miles of hiking trails, prairie and woodland areas, a glade complex home to a federally threated wildflower, and a day use area.

What you’ll do:

  • Assisting with natural resource management of the historic site, including hands on participation in prescribed burning and invasive special management
  • Assisting with routine maintenance, weekly mowing and grounds maintenance during the on season, annual inspections, and trail maintenance.
  • Assisting with cultural resource management of the historic site including annual maintenance of historic structures and cemeteries, and assisting with research related to 19th century homestead life.
  • Assist with basic management duties related to the overall operation and maintenance of Nathan & Olive Boone Homestead State Historic Site under the direction of the Park Superintendent.
  • Assist with developing and administering long-range plans and short-term projects.
  • Assist with planning and implementing interpretation of the Boone Homestead and its associated 19th century features including leading guided tours and planning special events.
  • Assist with administrative functions including: operating a small gift shop, preparing monthly reports, answering visitor questions, and other duties as assigned.
  • Overseeing the historical artifacts collection including cataloging items as needed, maintaining records, and inventory.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university can include: History, Park Management, Parks and Recreation, Wildlife Management, Forestry, Biology, Fisheries, Natural Sciences, Business or Public Administration, or related field (Experience involving management, supervision, and active participation in various activities involving interpretation, preservation, protection, maintenance, and enhancement of state parks and historic sites may substitute for the required education.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to operate a vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain National Wildfire Coordinating Group S-130 & S-190 certification within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, evenings, and split shifts
  • Available to participate in meetings, workshops and seminars requiring overnight stays
  • Must be able to walk long distances on uneven terrain in all kinds of weather and environmental conditions and have the ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Experience presenting educational programs, special events, or leading tours
  • Experience operating a variety of small outdoor power equipment
