Job Title: OUTSIDE PLANT TECHNICIAN

Primarily assists in the planning of outside plant jobs involving the installation, removal or rearrangement of outside plant facilities; provides construction drawings and measurements specifying the location of such outside plant facilities using plans and specifications provided by engineering personnel; keeps reports and records and performs other duties as may be assigned.

General Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Wears appropriate safety equipment and follows established safety practices and procedures.
• Loads all necessary materials aboard vehicle and rides or drives to work location.
• Makes detailed construction drawings of outside plant facilities using information provided by Plant Engineer.
• Makes detailed measurements of clearances, easements, property lines, etc.
• Consults with governmental agencies and utility companies on the placement and arrangement of facilities.
• Secures right-of-way information as necessary.
• Secures necessary permits for placement of facilities from cities, states, county and government agencies.
• Reads and interprets prints and drawings such as building plans, subdivision plats, utility prints and ownership maps.
• Figures cost estimates for the installation, rearrangement or removal of outside plant facilities.
• Reads and interprets rural zoning maps, subdivision plats and work order prints.
• Prepares cut sheets; plans sequence involved in making cable throws, and coordinates cable throws with all departments involved.
• Investigates delayed order reports and makes detailed construction drawings for providing service.
• Keeps reports and records including time reports and expense reports.
• Visits construction sites, climbs poles, enters cable vaults, crawl spaces and manholes as necessary.
• Uses test equipment to check for gas in manholes and utilizes pumps to empty water and other debris from manholes.
• May be required to work weekends, holidays, overtime, emergency call-outs and out-of-town assignments as required.
• Classroom training may be away from home location.
• Heavy lifting may be required in handling tools, materials and supplies.
• May be required to perform additional duties and tasks as required by the Company.

Basic Qualifications

• Results obtained in standard tests for this position must meet minimum requirements established by the Company, in accordance with Company policy.
• Must be able to read, write and perform the following mathematical calculations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
• Experience in outside plant work to the extent of knowing the operating limitations of outside plant equipment, and the principles involved in aerial and buried cable placement. Experience in one or more of the following jobs will be helpful: Cable Splicer, Field Drafter, Facility Assigner, and/or Line Worker.
• Drafting experience is preferred.
• Frequently required to climb ladders/poles to 60 feet.
• Must be able to identify true colors.
• May be required to crawl and stoop in confined areas.
• May be required to sit for extended periods of time.
• May require off-balanced and awkward positioning while working aloft.
• May work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Valid state driver's license.
• Ability to drive vehicle with manual gearshift.

Required: Valid, clean driving record
