JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: PT Firefighter/PT Firefighter EMT FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Department: Fire Department
Reports to: PT Lieutenant/Captain/Deputy Chief/Fire Chief Page 1 of 2

SUMMARY
Respond safely and promptly to fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents, and emergency medical calls. Participate in training for fire, rescue and medical procedures. Operate emergency equipment including: apparatus, hoses, hydrants, ladders, SCBA, hand tools, pumps. Conduct fire safety inspections and public education events. Perform station duties as necessary.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Perform fire ground and emergency medical operations using accepted principles and practices to mitigate different incidents. a. Respond safely and promptly to all types of emergencies b. Protect Life and Property while operating in immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) atmospheres. b. Operate fire apparatus and fire equipment including but not limited to hose lines, nozzles, ground ladders, pumps, chainsaws and medical equipment. c. Follow appropriate policies and procedures

2. Training a. Attend 50% of scheduled training events b. Maintain proper training in order to maintain certifications c. Follow appropriate policies and procedures while on city property.

3. Inspections a. Inspect buildings and property for possible fire hazards and compliance with adopted fire code. b. Complete annual fire hydrant flow testing and preventative maintenance. c. Complete required documentation of all building and property inspections and annual fire hydrant flow testing.

4. Public Education a. Provide fire safety education to public and private schools, daycares, and other locations or organizations. b. Present fire station tours to the public. c. Participate in community events.

5. Maintenance and repair a. Perform routine cleaning and maintenance on all fire apparatus and equipment b. Check all fire apparatus and equipment to ensure it is in good working order. c. Return all equipment to good working order after an emergency response. d. Perform daily housekeeping and maintenance tasks at fire station.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School diploma or GED
• Completion of IFASC or Kansas Firefighter I, NIMS 100, 700 by end of 18 month probationary period.
• Valid Kansas driver’s license with a good driving record required
• Basic computer skills
• Post Offer Employment Testing required (POET).

EXPERIENCE:
No previous experience required. Firefighter I course will be provided free of charge.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
All fire apparatus and equipment as well as normal office equipment including computers.

ROUTINE CONTACTS
Department personnel including Part time and Full time Firefighters, Lieutenants, Captains,
Chiefs and Administrative personnel. Elected and non-elected City personnel. General public.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions and hazardous situations. Carrying, lifting, moving, or pushing 50 pounds, bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and twisting. Exposure to human blood and body fluids, heavy machinery, excessive noise, hazardous chemicals, explosives, radiation, confined areas and heights.

WORK SCHEDULE
Schedule consists primarily of paid per call responses. This includes responding from home to the fire station as needed to respond on emergency vehicles at all hours of the day and night including weekends and holidays. Participation in bi-weekly trainings. Working 12 hour shifts to cover full time shift openings.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS
2 miles from the city limits of Valley Center
