DEPARTMENT: Occupational Therapy
TITLE: Occupational Therapist
RESPONSIBLE TO: Administrator
POSITION: Full-time, exempt position.
SUMMARY: The Occupational Therapist is responsible for delivering the highest quality therapy services to patients in the most cost effective manner. The Occupational Therapist organizes and conducts medically prescribed Occupational Therapy programs to restore function and prevent disability following, disease, injury, neurological impairment, diagnosed syndrome or developmental delays; helps patient reach his/her maximum performance and integrated into an education system and/or society while learning to live within the limits of his/her capabilities. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, participation/coordination with committees, performance improvement, marketing, program development and community involvement.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Occupational Therapist is required but not limited to:
- Perform an evaluation with appropriate, sufficient data to determine the individual’s functional/age appropriate abilities and deficient areas.
- Develops treatment plan and long/short term goals based upon the evaluation.
- Implements established treatment plan to enhance patient performance and achievement of goals using evidence based treatment consistent with current practice standards.
- Coordinates/participates with interdisciplinary team to determine the most appropriate treatment approach.
- Assesses patient changes in functional/developmental abilities as needed during the course of therapy.
- Participates in preparation and coordination of patient services upon discharge.
- Provides formal/informal education to patients/families/interdisciplinary team related to individual patient needs.
- Utilizes support staff effectively to ensure proper patient care.
- Identifies and utilizes appropriate equipment to enhance the level of patient function.
- Demonstrates and utilizes proper body mechanics and safety measures during patient treatment.
- Maintains proper professional demeanor at all times.
- Provides follow-up and contacts appropriate personnel to ensure continuity and complete delivery of therapeutic care.
- Abides by and follows the code of ethics as outlined by the AOTA.
- Demonstrates ability to effectively perform therapy in a timely manner without interfering with quality.
- Adjusts patient load/schedule to accommodate unscheduled patients, unforeseen circumstances, or department needs.
- Consistently uses time between patients for work related activities.
- Possess the skills necessary to utilize appropriate assessment tools, terminology and technology.
- Will maintain complete and accurate documentation in a timely manner throughout the course of treatment.
- Promotes a positive work/therapeutic environment maintaining open communication with everyone involved in patient care.
- Is organized, efficient and effective and demonstrates fiscal responsibility.
- Is dependable and flexible in order to meet department needs.
- Comply with all laws, rules, regulations and standards of conduct relating to the position. Report any suspected violations of the law or the standards of conduct to immediate supervisor.
- Uses modalities in a competent and effective manner.
- Represents Webster County Community Hospital through positive and professional behavior in the community.
- Submits billing in a timely and correct manner.
- Prescribes proper exercises for patients.
- Determines patients’ ability to be independent and reintegrate into the community or workplace after injury or illness
- Tests and measures the patients’ strength, range of motion, balance, and coordination, posture, muscle performance, respiration, and motor function.
- Performs all other duties as directed by Administrator.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Occupational Therapist must possess the skills necessary to evaluate, assess, work with, and understand the unique growth and developmental needs of a diverse age group of patients. The
Occupational Therapist must understand and demonstrate proficiency in all Occupational Therapy equipment and therapies and be able to learn and utilize new technology as it evolves.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
The Occupational Therapist must be a graduate of an accredited program approved by the AOTA in collaboration with the AMA council on medical education for the Occuipational Therapist. Prior supervisory and one to two years experience in a Critical Access Hospital setting is desired. The
Occupational Therapist must complete the appropriate amount of continuing education hrs per two year period to maintain an active license. The employee will participate in required orientation, safety and mandatory in-service training.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION
The Occupational Therapist must maintain Basic Life Support certification and be licensed in the state of
Nebraska to provide Occupational Therapy Services. Professional membership at the state and national level is not required but is strongly encouraged.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Provide accurate, concise and effective oral and written communication.
Promote positive environment conducive to teamwork, innovation and positive morale. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, patients, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractures, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems that deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The employee is frequently required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell. The employee is regularly required to lift or move up to 25 pounds, frequently required to lift or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally required to lift or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work area is usually moderate.
RESIGNATION
A four-week notice of resignation is required to terminate employment in good standing.
