POSITION OVERVIEW:
Responsible for growth within The Hanover’s wholesale partnership channel across our executive liability portfolio, including private and non-profit D&O, fiduciary and EPL. The role is primarily responsible for national wholesale relationships, driving growth consistent with business and book portfolio objectives. The role works independently and with a high degree of autonomy and authority. Demonstrates excellent communication skills clearly articulating the company’s appetite and strategy to maximize outcomes within relationships to provide efficiency in workload. Experienced within evaluation of exposures and application of technical underwriting to appropriately price risk within terms and conditions for long-term profitability. Exhibits a collaborative approach to business development, enterprise alignment and overall distribution strategy while being consistent in time-management practices to facilitate a high volume of submission activity coupled with quick decision-making. Accepts the challenge of being empowered to own results and produce outcomes while being accountable for results and book profile.

This is a Full-time, Exempt role.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:
  • Understands the pressure of production underwriting, and able to balance ups-and-downs throughout the year through thoughtful discussions.
  • Knows and applies underwriting concepts including risk selection, exposure and hazard identification and control, coverage implications, and loss analysis, using appropriate underwriting tools, disciplines, and strategies to ensure underwriting guidelines are followed; understands pricing components and rating methodology and correlates pricing to exposures.
  • Able to explain account decisions and accurately and consistently writes account summaries and underwriting decisions within guidelines.
  • Manages assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, new business, and portfolio management goals, by use of proven pipeline and marketing practices.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the market factors that can affect pricing and how it correlates to individuals’ book, agency’s book, the region, and countrywide.
  • Prepares or analyzes information on underwriting decisions, rate, underwriting requirements, company appetite, status, and declinations to drive results within the assigned territory.
  • Assists with developing products and coverages to support Hanover’s approach across various industries and classes of business
  • Familiarizes oneself with other Hanover departments for leveraging growth in areas of business where portfolio could be more balanced; collaborates with claims, actuarial and loss control on specific accounts or as a relationship-building opportunity.
  • Can identify, solicit, pipeline, negotiate, and close accounts aligned with business strategy.
  • Demonstrates a superior knowledge of underwriting trends, state rules, economic conditions, and industry news.
  • Utilizes market and competitor information to enhance relationships and individual account decision making.
  • Prioritizes and develops effective relationship management and producer activities to build trust, facilitate negotiation, and secure commitment to improve yield and retention ratios.
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of Hanover’s products and appetite while clearly communicating Hanover’s position at the point of sale.
  • Builds and maintains rigorous sales practices using all systems, sales tools and disciplines outlined in the sales best practices (SalesForce).
  • Makes presentations to agents and customers.
  • Utilize department and Specialty partners to augment sales process.
  • Utilize our value proposition to enhance agency economics, partner conversion and product specialization in partnership with local management.
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:
  • TRAVEL – willing to travel nationally ~25-35%
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Generally, 7+ years of underwriting experience, with majority aligned to executive lines
  • 7+ years of experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new and renewal business as well as complex accounts.
  • Highly proficient in policy language and product development
  • Demonstrates ability to adapt quickly to change, identify, analyze, and solve problems and willingness to being open to new and different ways of thinking.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential; effective face-to-face interactions and presentations to groups, as well as strong phone skills, along with sound written communications, including impeccable follow through
  • Ability to exercise judgment, negotiate and make sound business decisions effectively based on level of authority.
  • Demonstrates confidence in own abilities and is comfortable taking informed risk.
  • Strong ability to identify, analyze and solve problems as well as the ability to learn rapidly, adapt quickly to change, exercise influence, and manage and prioritize multiple concurrent projects.
  • Openly encourages other team members to share ideas and voice concerns.
  • Shows respect for differences and diversity in ideas and views. Involves other team members to achieve optimal performance.
  • Understands and seeks ways to improve the quality and results of one’s work.
  • Monitors progress against agreed upon timeline and deliverables.
