Summary

An Exciting Opportunity:
This is a great opportunity for someone currently or formerly working in a shop environment interested in expanding their knowledge in light automotive vehicles, medium, heavy-duty truck and construction equipment. Working with very knowledgeable personnel in the industry of solid waste while learning and experiencing the level of dedication and commitment maintenance employees provide keeping our facilities operational.

Shop personnel are designated as essential to the operation. Employees provide daily maintenance to vehicles and equipment that’s critical to keep everything operating and running smoothly. Everyday employees are assigned tasks to perform vehicle or equipment services to keep our preventative maintenance on schedule. Every task/job in maintenance is major due to how critical it is to the daily operations of the Cedar Hills Landfill and all our Transfer Stations.

King County Solid Waste is a great division to work for. The Solid Waste Division provides garbage transfer and disposal, and recycling services for approximately 1.3 million residents and 660,000 employers in King County. The King County solid waste system serves a large unincorporated area and 37 of the 39 cities in King County – the cities of Seattle and Milton are not part of the King County system.

  • At 6 months, the employee is confident they can perform certain tasks with little or no supervision.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Perform preventative maintenance and safety inspections on vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
  • Perform lubrication duties, select appropriate lubricants for machinery, including oil servicing, greasing, oil changes, filter changes and oil flow rate adjustment
  • Research and document differences in machinery lubrication and filtration systems, recommend improvements and modifications, develop procedures for lubrication functions.
  • Fuel, pressure wash, hand wash, steam clean vehicles, trailers and equipment.
  • Perform light-duty mechanical maintenance on vehicles and heavy equipment which may include:
  • install and service batteries
  • adjust brakes
  • replace air cleaners and light bulbs
  • check air pressure and adjust as needed
  • repair tubes and other mechanical parts in vehicles and equipment
  • replace wiper blades
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
You Should Have:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent work experience in an automotive or heavy equipment service or repair shop.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience of general lubrication requirements
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in the use of basic hand and air tools
  • Working knowledge on a variety of motorized vehicles (e.g. Light vehicles, Heavy Duty vehicles, and construction type equipment)
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and provide written and oral instructions
  • Skill in distinguishing different types of oils and lubricants
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer to input and retrieve data
Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Candidates must possess either a valid Class "A" or Class "B" Commercial driver's license upon hire with valid medical card.
  • Ability to obtain ASE T8 Preventative Maintenance and Inspections Certificate.
  • Ability to obtain TIA, Tire Industry Association Certification in accordance with the CBA.
  • Drug & Alcohol Testing and Physical Exam: This position(s) is defined as safety sensitive and as such, selected candidates will be required to undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow up testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass a physical examination.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Union Membership: This position will be represented by International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 302.

Work Location:
Cedar Hills Landfill, 16645 228th Avenue SE, Maple Valley, WA 98038 and a temporary shop location in Renton.

Work Schedule:
These positions work a 40-hour workweek and are overtime eligible with prior Supervisor approval. These positions may be required to work alternate work schedules to support core service hours. Service hours are weekdays 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Shifts are M-F 6 – 2:30 p.m. or M-F 2:30 to 11 and weekends W – Sat or Sun - Wed 6 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Shifts are bid by seniority.

Physical Environment/Requirements:
This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time, climb on equipment or use a Versa Lift and pressure wash for extended periods of time with pressures up to 5000 PSI. Requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment and tools. Requires the ability to work on uneven grades, slopes, surfaces, and terrain in inclement weather and other adverse conditions such as dust, odor, high volume noise and heavy traffic. There may be periods of sustained physical effort.
