The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

A Locksmith is a position in the facilities department providing high quality and effective work that provides quality services to the academic, research and administrative units on the Columbia University Campus (CUIMC). Position performs skilled, repair, and service of locks, electronic access equipment and related hardware. Position is also responsible for the making of keys. A Locksmith must be able to perform and/or assist in any routine or emergency function of the locksmith position. "Locksmith" position deals in the mechanical actions, and the correct operations of all locks, key or keyless, or similar devices, including electronic access equipment and related hardware.

Responsibilities

Trade or occupation is repairing, servicing, installing, inspecting, opening and closing such locks by mechanical means, other than with the regular key made for the purpose.

Without altering, marring or destroying the original condition or effectiveness of such locks or similar devices in any shape or manner, or a maker or manufacturer of locks, pressure keys, skeleton keys, pass keys, jigs, or any other mechanical device to aid a locksmith in the plying of his or her trade.

Locksmith may open any lock for which a key or combination may have been lost; or to make any repairs to, or change in, the mechanical adjustment or combination of any lock: or to make any original key or any other device or contraption to open a Jock.

Reads, understands and interprets blue prints, drawings, floor plans and schedules, and manufacturers operating and/or maintenance specifications and relevant building features.

Installs, repairs, maintains and services locks and panic hardware on the campus. Installs, repairs, maintains and services mortise locks

Installs, repairs, maintains and services cylindrical locks Installs, repairs, maintains and services fire/exit hardware Installs, repairs, maintain and services cylinders.

Maintains key records in hardcopy and electronic format. Manufactures Creates and issues new keys.

Installs new lock cylinders in defective locks. Opens locks when keys are lost.

Opens locks when keys or combination may have been lost Sets up Creates and maintains control of master key program.

Proficient In the employment of all tools, equipment, instruments and in the methods and materials common to the locksmlth trade. Attends and participates in all departmental trainings and meetings.

Attends and completes all relevant on-the-job training as required.

Must perform relevant duties assigned in an emergency as determined by management. (Provide guidance, direction, and on the job training to all junior personnel in the proper procedures of maintenance, repair and operation.

Work in conjunction with other trades on preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on equipment, systems and building features. Process paperwork including but not limited to work orders, inventory, and preventative maintenance forms.

Perform work tasks, report deficiencies, and maintain and complete daily records of labor and materials used during work tasks via CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).

Maintain completeness, timeliness, and accuracy of the work and work orders.

Continually and urgently communicate with supervisor regarding any apparent operational deficiencies.

Ability to perform all relevant tasks and duties related to the Maintenance Worker and Apprentice positions.

Responds to requests for maintenance and service from building occupants to include emergencies, maintenance problems, requested installations, modifications, repairs and adjustments, and other similar tasks.

Skilled in the use of all equipment and tools used by a locksmith Setting up of locking systems.

Ability to Cut keys.

Ability to move lock pick in cylinder to open door without keys.

Ability to pick lock cylinders to open door without keys as well as other by-pass method.

Maintaining master and sub master key inventory.

Maintain clean and neat work environment in shop area as well as any area where locksmith work may be completed.

Accompany and/or assist facilities staff, project leaders, consultants and contractors as directed or assigned.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work herein.

Minimum Qualifications

HS diploma or GED

Must have 5 years as a Licensed Locksmith

Must have City of New York Locksmith / Key Maker License

Preferred Qualifications

Hold and maintain an active Motor Vehicle Class D License. Strong team mentality (ability to work with others).

Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, customers, clients, students, vendors, and management.

Hold licenses/certifications as required by local, state and federal regulations.

Knowledge of and/or Training on the following:
Use of portable fire extinguisher Hazardous Waste awareness

Asbestos hazards and safety Confined space entry procedures Infection Control procedures.

Lock-out/Tag-out procedures-specific to locksmith trade.

Communication etiquette including phone, radio, and customer service.

Must demonstrate knowledge of all CUMVC's safety policies and procedures.

Must demonstrate applicable institutional knowledge and practices of the facility and its operations.

Must demonstrate knowledge of all CUMVC's customer service policies.

Ensures positive interaction by acknowledging, greeting, and provides excellent customer service.

Must be able to work all shifts as assigned.

Stay abreast of advanced Locksmith technologies, trends.
