Team Member Objectives

Title: Dental Assistant

Design of the Position: The Dental Assistant will assist the dentist chairside to deliver quality, comfortable care in a stress-free environment. This will include readiness and cleanliness of the operatory and, preparation of patient for dental treatment. This team member needs to be able and willing to perform chairside assistance, capturing x-rays, recording information in patient charts, performing Expanded Duties if qualified, and opening/closing office.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE AND RESPONSIBILITIES are as follows. Other duties may be appointed:

A. Preparation Responsibilities

Turn on all cart, x-ray, intra-oral units, wall switches, ultrasonic, autoclave etc. for the start of the day.

Evaluate sterilization area for cleanliness and organization for the beginning of the day and throughout the day.

Make sure all the treatment rooms are ready, stocked and clean (certain rooms may apply to specific Assistants).

Seat patients and review with patient treatment that is going to be performed. Ask if there are any questions or concerns, and make sure you make doctor aware of any.

Be responsible for the appearance of the treatment rooms.

B. Assisting Responsibilities

Assist to the doctor at all times.

Anticipate the doctor's needs at all times, look to the next step.

Capture digital x-rays, process, for doctor to view.

Take impressions, if qualified.

Fabricate temporary crowns, if qualified.

Assist doctor with administration of nitrous oxide and any other medications that need to be given during appointment time.

Perform all expanded duties, if qualified.

Participate in morning and team meetings.

Shows an interest and participation in meetings.

Is willing to participate in seminars, tapes etc. that facilitates both professional and personal growth.

Ability to calm and reassure patients throughout dental procedure.

Ability to work safely and follow safety and office protocol.

C. Charting Responsibilities

Chart all existing and treatment to be done, record the date, service rendered and the fee, if suitable.

Make sure the patient's chart is complete and all services for that day of treatment are recorded prior to dismissing the patient. Include the next appointment to be scheduled, the treatment to be provided and the time units needed to perform the treatment to be done.

It is imperative that all chart notes are neat, accurate, and legible for each procedure. If additional information is necessary, it is your responsibility to seek the proper person for advice.

All charts, routing slips, treatment cards, and lab slips are to be completed before patient leaves the office.

It is necessary that the chart arrive at the front desk at the same time as the departing patient or preferably, before.

D. Patient Care Responsibilities

Welcome, seat and dismiss patients cheerfully.

Show care, concern, and respect for patients' well-being and comfort at all times.

Insure that the patient is comfortable. Request additional assistance if needed.

Give and make sure that all patients are aware of any post-operative instructions for any procedure they had done for the rest of the day and for the time between visits. If you need additional assistance or directions then please be responsible for asking the appropriate person(s).

Review follow-up appointments with the patient and what they should do if any questions or concerns arise.

E. Overall Practice Responsibilities

Greet, seat and dismiss patients cheerfully.

Always present a positive image of dental services to be rendered.

Always present a positive relationship with other team members and your doctor, in front of patients.

Always punctual to work, with patient seating and dismissing.

Uses downtime constructively.

Engages only in positive conversation regarding another team member.

Presents themselves in a clean, well groomed professional manner.

Personal calls do not interfere with work.

Assist front desk with the following if time permits: Greeting patients as the enter office, answer phone, take messages, make appointments, financial arrangements, and confirm appointments.

Perform light housekeeping such as vacuuming, taking out garbage, cleaning lunch area, and patient/employee bathrooms.

Is willing to participate in seminars, meetings, tapes, etc.

F. Sterilization Responsibilities

Always follow OSHA guidelines for all procedures.

Mask, gloves and safety glasses are to be worn and accessible at all times during dental procedures, clean-up of the treatment rooms, and sterilizing instruments.

Be responsible for the sterilization of instruments and set-up of trays.

Clean sinks in treatment areas and sterilization area.

Empty trash, clean, and disinfect treatment rooms, and sterilization area.

H. Laboratory Responsibilities(if appointed)

Pour, mount and trim study models and other lab procedures, if qualified.

Make sure all lab cases are back for the next day.

Be responsible for the lab area.

Responsible for communicating with laboratory.

CREDENTIALS and REQUIREMENTS: To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty with in expectations. The terms listed below are of the knowledge, skill, and experience of the individual. Reasonable arrangements may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or Graduate Degree and completion of accredited dental assistant program; 2 years general dentistry experience with some specialized experience preferred, or 4 years related experience and/or training; or combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, and interpret common business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Capable of writing reports such as detailed information in patient charts, and communicate with patient without interference or language boundaries.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and REGISTRATION

State Registered or Certification from an Accredited Dental Assistant Program

X-ray Certification

Certified in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Certified in Sedation, if appropriate.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour
