Job Purpose

Within this Mebane library position the candidate will be expected to provide professional library programs on a regular basis, such as Baby/Toddler Storytime. Other programming will center around school age youth. This position also works with the Children’s team to prepare and present special programs throughout the year, such as holiday programs and Summer Reading programs. This position connects with parents and caregivers and provides outreach at special events. During a program, this position may read stories aloud with appropriate expression, tell flannel stories from memory, sing songs, and use puppets and other props. Knowledge of children, parents, local community, children's literature and popular reading trends will be an asset in this position.

This position primarily works the desk in the Children’s Services Department at Mebane Public Library, but will also work at the Circulation and Reference Services desks and other library and county locations if needed. In addition to programming, this position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting library patrons with directional and reference questions, providing reader’s advisory services, assisting library patrons with basic office machines, checking library materials in and out, issuing library cards, taking payments for fines and fees, calling holds, answering the phone, preparing carts for shelving, and other clerical tasks as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, prepares and presents programs on a regular basis including weekly story times for infants and toddlers and/or preschoolers, book clubs, holiday programs, summer reading programs and other events throughout the year for school age youth.
  • Assists children and caregivers in selecting appropriate materials through reference help, reader's advisory and programs where appropriate
  • Regularly works at a public service desk interacting with a diverse clientele, checking materials in and out, registering new patrons, answering questions, helping computer users, taking payments for fines and fees as well as other library functions
  • Provides instruction for children, parents and teachers in early literacy and in the use of library resources, including electronic resources
  • Increases skills and knowledge through professional reading and workshops
  • Assists with the cleanliness and attraction of the children's area by working on displays, bulletin boards and ensuring shelves are arranged and organized
  • Responsible for creating and assisting with flyers and posters for events and programming including assisting with assembling age-appropriate reading lists
  • Assists when asked with outreach services to daycares, preschools, public/private schools and homeschoolers

Skills & Abilities

Education & Experience: This position requires a two-year degree from an accredited school or university, as well as prior Library experience. Prior experience working with children in a formal setting is preferred. Prior experience working in programming is preferred.
Computer Skills: Prior experience with Microsoft Windows, Proficient in typing accurately
License/Credentials: Bilingual in Spanish, preferred
Position Specifics: This position is a 40 hour a week position with the expectation there is one scheduled evening per week and one weekend per month.

Work is performed in an open office environment.


Health Insurance - Part-time employees are eligible for medical/health benefits upon the 1st of the month following the 30-day waiting period. Changes to elections can then be made during the annual open enrollment period, usually in the fall, or within 30 days of a qualified life event (marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child, change in child's dependent status, death of a spouse or other dependent and other change in employment status). Part-time insurance rates are structured based on hours worked.

Alamance County Government currently offers three plans of medical/pharmacy benefit options including a COPAY Plan 70, COPAY Plan 80 and a QHDHP with HSA.

Dental & Vision Insurance - A voluntary dental and vision program is available to PT employees. The current PPO style plan allows employees to be provided access to dental and vision providers for a variety of services. The plan, if elected, would be effective the first of the month following 30 days of PT employment. Coverage must be elected within your first 30 days of PT employment or upon a qualifying event.

Retirement Benefits - Membership in the NC Local Government Employees Retirement System (NCLGERS) is a requirement for all full-time and regular part-time employees (working more than 1,000 hours annually). Employees contribute six percent (6%) of their annual compensation before it is taxed. If you leave the County service before retirement, you may withdraw your retirement contributions or elect to freeze your contributions in anticipation of future local government employment. If you have at least five (5) years of service, you are considered 100% vested in NCLGERS. Alamance County will be contributing a percentage as required by NCLEGRS on your behalf as well.

Alamance County Employee Health Clinic: Available to employees and spouses who are covered under the Alamance County Insurance Plan and their covered dependents, 18 years of age and older. Retired employees under age 65 are also eligible to use the clinic. Depending on insurance coverage elected, care at the clinic ranges from free to a fair market value cost.

Services Available:
Treatment of injuries or illnesses such as Flu, Sinus Infection, pink eye, sprains, strains or fever.
