Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat
hunger. Our goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives.
FAO Sub-Regional Office for Central Asia (SEC) is responsible for developing, promoting, overseeing and implementing strategies
for addressing food security, agriculture and rural development priorities in the sub-region; Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The Organization’s technical assistance includes institution building, development
of knowledge and competencies, and exchange of experience among countries facing the challenges of transition.
The LEAP Training Consultant will work with the Sub-Regional Office for Central Asia (SEC) as well as with the Livestock Information, Sector Analysis and Policy Branch (NSAL).


Reporting Lines

The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the Subregional Coordinator (FAO SEC), the direct supervision of the Senior Policy Officer (SEC), and in close collaboration with the International Livestock Specialist (SEC).


Technical Focus

The incumbent will support development of technical capacity in seven SEC countries to apply the Livestock Environmental Assessment Partnership’s (LEAP) Guidelines for quantification of the impact of livestock on biodiversity. Subsequently, the skills of national stakeholders will facilitate the supply of science-based evidence for designing new livestock-based projects.


Tasks and responsibilities

  • Develop a training programme (classroom & online) for building capacities of COs and national stakeholders to apply the Livestock Environmental Assessment Partnership’s (LEAP) Guidelines for quantification of the impact of livestock on biodiversity;
  • As the key trainer, travel to each SEC country, co-organize jointly with the International Livestock Specialist (SEC) and FAO COs and lead seven in-country face-to-face trainings;
  • Collect feedback from trainees and stakeholders and make any necessary improvements in the training programme;
  • Prepare a report with feedback from trainees and stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree in animal production, ecology or another relevant discipline;
  • Five years of relevant experience in environmental management or livestock production;
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English or Russian language and limited knowledge (level B) of one of the other FAO languages for COF. Working knowledge of English or Russian for PSA.

Selection Criteria

  • Participation in LEAP’s Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for biodiversity (highly preferable);
  • Experience with practical application of the LEAP’s Guidelines for quantitative assessment (Biodiversity and
the livestock sector);
  • Teaching/training skills.
