Duties
  • Receive and evaluate 911 emergency calls and dispatch appropriate fire, police and ambulance services.
  • Dispatch appropriate fire, police and ambulance services based on call information.
  • Refer non-emergency callers to appropriate civilian and governmental agencies.
  • Monitor severe weather reporting system and broadcasting alerts as necessary.
  • Monitor closed circuit television and alarms and take appropriate action to address observed activity.
  • Retrieve sensitive law enforcement information from computerized databases.
  • Distribute and balance the workload among employees assigned to a specific shift.
  • Track work progress on a day to day basis.
  • Instruct employees on specific tasks and techniques per established procedures.
  • Review completed reports.

Conditions of Employment
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is subject to shift work. The incumbent is required to work an alternate work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays).
  • This is a mission essential position and the incumbent is required to work regardless of weather conditions, Force Protection Condition (FPCON) or installation closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
  • The incumbent is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch education requirements through in-service training that is offered locally.
  • The incumbent must maintain an overall compliance score of 90 percent, or better, as reviewed by the Advanced Quality Assurance (AQUA) software.
  • The work is performed in a highly stressful, restricted office environment. At times work activity will be fast paced with multiple activities requiring attention at the same time.
  • The incumbent may be required to wear a uniform.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work that involves emergency service experience which may have been obtained through law enforcement, fire protection, medical service, emergency service dispatcher, or other similar activity. Experience requires the knowledge of law enforcement and fire service terminology, techniques and procedures to dispatch appropriate equipment and apparatus to emergency situations, prioritizing incoming emergency and non-emergency calls, and providing instructions concerning emergency actions such as first aid. Provide instruction to dispatch employees in specific duties and job techniques. Evaluate emergency calls and answering questions of other dispatch employees. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
