The Department of Medicine, Division of The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine is seeking a full time Laboratory Technician I. The position will reside within the Division’s Alpha One Antitrypsin Lab. A strong math background and attention to detail are a must. This position will primarily provide support to the management and genetic screening of our mouse colonies. Due to the access that will be required to the Animal Care Facility – numerous IACUC and EH&S training requirements exist. The successful candidate will be able attend work on a set schedule and to work independently with minimal supervision.

Essential functions;

Management of Mouse Colony
1. Picking up mice and samples from Animal Care Services
2. Participating in organ and tissue harvest work
3. Generating detailed and accurate sample labels
4. Processing mouse plasma and serum samples with high accuracy
5. Sample preparation for Nephelometry testing
6. Result entry to excel and/or database
7. Isolation of genomic DNA
8. Set up of real-time PCR genotyping plates


General maintenance of equipment and supplies
1. Assist in autoclaving of biohazardous waste and sterilization of surgical equipment.
2. Cleaning and organization of work stations
3. Inventory and ordering of necessary supplies
10% Collaborative science
1. Attend weekly lab meetings
2. Liaison with visiting professors/researchers and develop excellent communications with collaborators

Other duties as assigned by direct supervisor



Expected Salary:

$17.00 - $20.00 hourly



Minimum Requirements:

Associate degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.



Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in biology or a related field and 2+ years of experience in a laboratory environment. Immunology coursework and/or experience is a plus.
