Summary/Objective
5SRC seeks a Junior Chemist to support the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) National Center for Explosives Training and Research (NCETR) on Redstone Arsenal. NCETR consolidates all of the agency’s key explosives, fire, canine, and response operations out of Huntsville, Alabama. ATF provides outstanding training facilities and the unmatched expertise of its training staff in delivering life-saving advanced explosives and arson training for our nation’s explosives handlers, bomb technicians, criminal investigators, and military EOD teams. The main NCETR facility and explosives ranges in Huntsville make this center a unique resource in the fight against explosives-related violent crime and the government-wide C-IED efforts.
Essential Functions
Junior Chemist performs routine safe, effective, and efficient methods of synthesizing chemicals including high explosives to support R&D, participate in experiments using corrosive, explosive, and toxic materials in a safe manner under the direction of a senior chemist, and utilizes lab equipment in support of synthesis experiments and lab scale process development. Performs tasks such as preparing graphical or tabular presentations of data, simple data interpretation, preparation of supporting material, etc. under the direction of a senior chemist, and independently. Perform routine safe, effective, and efficient methods of characterizing chemicals including high explosives to support R&D, by utilizing analytical instrumentation in tandem with a senior chemist by utilizing knowledge of instrumentation and standard laboratory practices. Provide support in analysis of the characterization results independently and alongside senior chemist using previous direct experience with energetic materials. Perform research and report writing tasks independently to support project work using knowledge of energetic materials field for literature reviews and document formatting.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in a technically related field from an accredited university
- 1-year technical experience in Chemistry
