Job Description:
Description of Department: The mission of Facilities Services is to operate, maintain and renew campus facilities to support the mission of the campus, using quality materials and workmanship to ensure a safe, reliable, attractive, and efficient physical environment.
The Facility Services Department at the State University of New York at Oswego invites reliable and dedicated individuals to join our team as Janitor. This is a continuous recruitment effort for temporary and permanent positions as they become available. A Janitor functions as a working supervisor and supervises lower-level cleaning staff responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of assigned areas in campus buildings, and surrounding grounds and walkways. Janitors also perform a variety of cleaning and unskilled maintenance tasks requiring light, medium, and heavy physical effort and other duties as assigned.
Various shifts are available.

Description of Responsibilities:
Operational Needs:
- Knowledge of the use of small hand tools
- Knowledge of the properties of various cleaning substances.
- Ability to use various cleaning equipment and products
- Ability to climb ladders or scaffolds.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to stand, stoop, bend, and stretch for long periods.
- Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor.
- Ability to communicate effectively in individual and group settings.
- Have a record of dependability and satisfactory work performance.
- When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
- Basic computer skills.
- Use of web and/or desktop-based Maintenance work order system.
- Be able to wear appropriate PPE -Personal Protective Equipment and passing Respiratory Protection Fit test is required.
Job Duties:
Performs a variety of cleaning, maintenance, and care activities in the assigned area including mopping, washing, dusting, polishing, vacuuming, moving and setting up furniture, emptying trash, recycling, and other related duties as described in detail in the classification standard for Cleaner.
Supervises lower-level custodial personnel in the cleaning and care of an assigned area by assigning specific tasks, providing instructions, making sure the work is completed according to custodial program specifications, and monitoring employee time and attendance.
Performs unskilled repairs and maintenance work such as hanging pictures, curtains, and blinds; fixing or replacing broken shelves and doorknobs; performing routine maintenance on manual and motorized cleaning and maintenance equipment; unplugging toilets, traps, or sinks; and other unskilled maintenance and repair work, as assigned.
Sets up equipment and seating facilities for public meetings, classes, graduations, and special events.
Requisitions cleaning and bathroom supplies, and industrial cleaning agents to clean assigned areas, as directed.
Responds to requests for cleaning or maintenance, and refers matters requiring semiskilled or skilled trades work to higher-level staff.
Reports damages or needed maintenance and repair in an assigned area requiring semiskilled or skilled trades staff to higher-level staff.

There are no education or experience qualifications for this class. Applicants must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and be able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions.
