    Educational Interpreter/Visual Communication Specialist

    REPORTS TO: Teacher of the Deaf and/or Special Education Coordinator
    DEPARTMENT: Deaf/Hard of Hearing/Interpreter

    POSITION OVERVIEW
    The primary responsibility is to provide interpreting/transliterating for students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing, thereby equalizing educational access to communication by meeting the cultural and linguistic needs of the setting.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Provides visual communication access:

    • Prepares for assignments by reviewing notes and syllabi, previewing films, videos or texts, and meeting with presenters, faculty, tutors or students.
    • Provides culture-specific information and adapts interpretations/transliteration to facilitate communication between hearing and deaf cultures.

    Communicates with educational team in support of team goals and the provision of services:

    • Demonstrates effective professional relationships with students, teachers, parents, and peers and facilitates resolution of support service concerns as a multidisciplinary education team.
    • Provides information through a staffing to faculty, staff and students regarding (1) interpretation, (2) communication between deaf and hearing people, and (3) deafness.
    • Represents daily the mission of Special School District.
    • Attends staff meeting and networks with other staff members to maintain the flow of information critical to quality service. (This includes checking voice mail and email daily.)
    • Provides clarification of the interpreter’s role to all students, staff, and parents.
    • Participates in IEPs as appropriate.
    • Maintains ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
    • Follows supervisory chain of command as applicable to the situation.

    Demonstrates professional development:

    • Maintains interpreting skills as outlined by the Missouri Interpreter Certification System (MICS).
    • Develops specialized content expertise appropriate for current assignment.
    • Enhances interpersonal communication skills.
    • Participates in preschool workshops, in-service training and parent conferences when appropriate
    • Renews certification and license on an annual basis within required timelines
    • Performs other duties within the guidelines of ethical conduct as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Education and Experience

    • Two years of college; demonstration of interpreting and transliterating skills (sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign) and proficiency in using the English language; knowledge of the role of an educational interpreter within the educational team; awareness of deaf culture, sign language systems and American Sign Language.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    • Maintain current Missouri Interpreter Certification System at the Basic, Advanced or Master level.
    • Maintain current Licensure through the State Committee of Interpreters
