POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision from the Director of International Student Office, the New York Film Academy (NYFA) New York (NY) Campus International Student Advisor will assess international student needs, goals, interests and prior academic experiences in order to guide students in the design and implementation of a successful academic plan. The Advisor will collaborate with faculty members to address the academic advising needs of individuals or groups of students. Advisors are also responsible for understanding and interpreting the Colleges policies and academic options of all degree and certificate programs to help facilitate the students academic success.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following responsibilities are general duties that a particular employee in this position may or may not be required to perform. The day-to-day duties required of this position may vary.
- Advise prospective, new and continuing international students regarding student visa process, maintaining F-1 status, work authorization and other related topics.
- Use SEVIS to create and maintain student immigration record including initial SEVIS record, transfers in and out, extensions, OPT, medical leave, leaves of absence.
- Create and present international student orientations
- Create and maintain student records, both electronic and physical files
- Develop a full understanding of all issues related to international student regulations and requirements as set forth by the Department of Homeland Security, Student Exchange and Visitor Program.
- Promotes organization policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations; advises University personnel regarding the development and implementation of regulatory strategy, potential areas of regulatory concern, and new government/regulatory developments.
- Act as a resource to school departments for immigration questions.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of International Student Office or senior management.
KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCIES:
- Broad & in-depth knowledge and understanding of admissions procedures and policies in higher education pertaining to a schools international student body.
- Familiarity with international laws, policies and procedures pertaining to international students.
- Knowledge of F-1 VISA process and regulations; and understanding of immigration issues related to international students.
- Knowledge of working with higher education colleagues to strengthen organization commitment to international-mindedness and principles of diversity, inclusion and equity
- Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with the various constituencies of the Academy, alumni, and community at large.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative personnel, faculty, classified staff, students and the general public.
- Ability to work independently and simultaneously on projects of varied complexity, carrying out each to its conclusion with a very high level of effectiveness.
- Must possess ability to exercise group leadership skills, which emphasize collaboration, consensus building, conflict resolution, and problem solving.
- Must possess ability and willingness to manage multiple priorities and projects.
- Must posses accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail.
- Ability to identify opportunities and to convert challenges into innovative solutions and programs that will advance the future of the institution.
- Ability to work in a highly demanding, multiple task environment, with changing priorities is key.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and CERTIFICATION:
- Bachelors Degree in a related field. Experience may substitute for required education up to four (4) years.
- Two (2) or more years experience working with college students or young adults in an academic or career services counseling capacity.
- Two (2) or more years of experience in international student advising, international education, student affairs or admissions.
- Experience as an international student advisor/ Designated School Official (DSO).
- Experienced in using SEVIS
- Knowledge of immigration polices and laws pertaining to international students.
- Knowledge of SEVIS regulations and experience working with the SEVIS database.
- Must be US citizen or permanent resident as required by Federal regulations for use of SEVIS.
- Experience working in a fast pace multi-tasking results drive environment with attention to detail.
- Intermediate proficient in Microsoft Suite Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and with Google documents.
