Job description
Employment Status:
Full Time, Salary, Exempt
- Prepare rainforest exhibit for opening each morning
- Maintain exhibit spaces
- Care and maintain plants in our greenhouses, gardens and rainforest exhibit; including watering, fertilization, propagation, planting and removing plants, pruning, mulching and weeding
- Identify and control pests and diseases using IPM practices
- Keep records of plant care and maintenance
- Operate equipment and tools safely and efficiently to accomplish work
- Maintain and troubleshoot equipment and horticulture-related mechanical systems
- Ensure containment protocols are being adhered to in all USDA-APHIS quarantined zones
- Interact with and educate patrons through tours, classes and outreach programs
- Assist other Butterfly Center staff with projects
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field
- 3+ years of hands-on plant-related experience preferred
- Tropical plant and irrigation system knowledge is a plus
- Strong work ethic and attention to detail
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
- Comfortable working in a team-oriented environment
Requirements:
- Able to sit, stand, bend, stoop, and occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Able to spend several hours on their feet and work in outdoor conditions
- Able to work designated weekends and holidays, as needed
- Able to arrive to work on time
- Proven track record of reliable punctuality and attendance
- Comply with the museum’s COVID-19 protocols
