JOB DESCRIPTION


Summary/Objective

Disability Hearing Officers conduct statewide administrative hearings on Social Security Administration Title II and Title XVI medical cessations at the reconsideration level of appeal.

Principal Job Duties & Responsibilities


  • Prepare clear and well-written hearing decisions.
  • Conduct disability hearings (in-person, MS Teams, telephone, etc.)
  • Obtain testimony provided by the claimant/witness
  • Administer oath to hearing participants prior to the proceeding
  • Research laws, regulations, policies, and precedent decisions
  • Analyze evidence to determine the appropriate conclusion (independent decision-maker)
  • Evaluate the need for additional evidence
  • Assess the level of severity of the claimant’s medical impairment
  • Very limited travel may be necessary/expense reimbursement (Overnight stay may be required).

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers and smartphones.

Work Conditions

Incumbents working in this job perform duties in an office setting. This is a 40-hour workweek requirement. The position may involve managing a high-volume workload and demands a high level of accuracy while working with deadlines. Regular attendance is an important part of being successful in this position. Reasonable accommodations can be made available to qualified individuals upon request.


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5

p.m. This position occasionally requires long hours and weekend work.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor’s degree in a related area from an accredited college or university AND four years of experience interpreting and applying laws regarding program eligibility OR two years of experience required at the lower level Adjudicator 3 (LEP012) or position equivalent.


Preferred Qualifications

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, preference will be given to those who meet the following:

  • At least one (1) year of experience as a Disability Hearing Officer processing Social Security Disability Determinations (within the past 2 years)
  • Proficient Writing Skills

Guides, and/or instructs the work assignments of subordinate staff. Determines penalties or the existence and the amount of liability, or recommends the acceptance or rejection of claims, or compromise settlements. Determines validity of claim or appeal and associated liability according to current laws, administrative and judicial precedents, and available evidence. Ensures that all hearings are conducted fairly and just while safeguarding the legal rights of all involved parties. Explains the rights of appeal to the involved parties. Oversees the research and analysis of laws, regulations, policies, and precedent decisions. Performs on-going case reviews to ensure compliance with federal, state and agency policies and procedures. Recommends the acceptance or rejection of claims or compromise settlements. Reviews and/or prepares written opinions and decisions
