The mission of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is to conserve the lands and waters upon which all life depends. As a science-based organization, we develop innovative, on-the-ground solutions to the world’s toughest environmental challenges so that people and nature can thrive. Our work is guided by our values, which include a commitment to diversity and respect for people, communities, and cultures. From a rewarding mission to career development and flexible schedules, there are many reasons to love life #insideTNC. Want to know more? One of TNC’s primary goals is to cultivate an inclusive work environment so that employees around the globe have a sense of belonging and feel that their unique contributions are valued. We know we’ll only achieve our mission by hiring and engaging a diverse staff that reflects the communities in which we work. Recognizing that people bring talent and skills that have been developed outside the scope of a job, we take a holistic approach to recruitment that considers life experience in addition to the professional requirements listed in our postings. Please apply – we’d love to hear from you. To quote a popular saying at TNC, “you’ll join for the mission, and you’ll stay for the people.”

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

TNC has a robust and active GIS community with over 1,500 staff who use GIS full or part time, including scientists, analysts, cartographers and data managers. The GeoCloud Specialist will support this community by enhancing the reliability, availability, and performance of GIS software, products, and services primarily related to the Conservation GeoCloud. Essential Functions include:

Conservation Program support: The GeoCloud Specialist will support various conservation programs and high-visibility initiatives across TNC by exploring Amazon Web Services (AWS) capabilities and services (the main GeoCloud infrastructure platform). This includes but are not limited to: EC2, RDS, CloudFormation, EBS, VPC, S3, CloudFront, IAM and Lambda. The support is focused on database design, geoprocessing, application hosting and infrastructure development in partnership with TNC business units and contracted web and software developers using JavaScript, CSS, HTML and the ArcGIS API for JavaScript. Spatial data is typically published to ArcGIS Enterprise and/or ArcGIS Online.

Operational Support: Responsible for server instances deployed in the cloud primarily but not exclusive to the Conservation GeoCloud. Tasks include instance launch, configuration, upgrading, support of operating systems and GIS services, maintenance, monitoring, security and backup/recovery. This position works closely with the Geospatial Systems Architect and Geospatial Systems Specialist staff to define, develop and deploy spatial data technology in support of TNC’s shared conservation agenda and 2030 goals across the organization.

Technical Implementation: This position will be responsible for cloud-based, geospatial system operations and implementation of conservation-based solutions according to system requirements following TNC’s methodology and development of best practices. This includes familiarity with database schema, cloud infrastructure, and migrating on-premises servers to the cloud. The GeoCloud Specialist will also be involved in specific GIS projects with field staff, implementing and supporting online database management, spatial analyses, and monitoring efforts.

Help Desk Escalations: The GeoCloud Specialist will provide Tier 2 support for geospatial systems, escalating to the Geospatial Systems Architect as necessary. This support includes end user technical issues and troubleshooting. Essential systems administration will be conducted using similar procedures and techniques as used with existing field Windows servers and will follow established technology Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
