VisitNorfolk is looking for a dynamic, outgoing individual to represent Norfolk and the surrounding Coastal Virginia area to tourists, visitors and local residents alike from our brand new, state-of-the-art Visitor Information Center main desk. This position requires extensive knowledge of the local area; specifically, the amenities and attractions that the City of Norfolk has to offer. Work involves providing detailed and accurate directions to area hotels, restaurants, attractions and businesses with the use of maps and/or the internet, as well as preparing, stocking and selling merchandise.This position also provides administrative support and works with Visitor Information Specialists as part of the Visitor Services team.

Hours: Part-time, 24 - 30 hours week


Major Responsibilities:

  • Answers telephone in a courteous and efficient manner; refers calls to the appropriate person or office; takes messages and responds to inquiries
  • Greets visitors or clients in a courteous and professional manner; determines purpose of visit, contacts appropriate office, and directs visitors
  • Provides detailed and accurate directions to area hotels, restaurants, attractions, and businesses with use of maps and/or the Internet; Maintains updated knowledge of Norfolk and the coastal Virginia region; Keeps dining guide listings up to date
  • Prepares, stocks, and sells merchandise, includes ticketing and merchandising products; Keeps brochure racks full with current brochures; Responds to online requests for information
  • Monitors and evaluates Mermaid Market inventory and sales patterns; Recommends products as needed; Assists with sourcing new products, giving attention to locally made and small business providers
  • Enters Convention Services bookings into database
  • Enters visitor information into online guest book; Assist with monthly reports-Point of Origin and Monthly Visitor Center report; Updates yearly visitation report monthly.
  • Receives and distributes incoming mail and delivers outgoing mail to post office; Processes all online shipping labels for bulk shipments including UPS & FEDEX
  • Orders, distributes, and keeps inventory of office supplies and printer cartridges
  • Maintains front desk information notebook, updating with current information; posts staff anniversaries and birthdays
  • Ensures the Front Desk is covered during regular office hours
  • Maintains polite, helpful relations with the general public at all times
  • Projects a positive image of the Norfolk Convention and Visitors Bureau and display a positive attitude in all internal and external communications
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • High school diploma with at least two years’ experience in a professional office environment, strong communication and organizational skills, and some public contact experience preferred
  • Knowledge of standard office procedures and practices; Ability to perform basic clerical tasks and find information using basic research skills, including the Internet
  • Ability to answer the telephone efficiently and clearly; Ability to take messages and refer callers
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft and Apple software applications
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Ability to collect and record money from retail sales
  • Ability to work as a team with co-workers
  • Outgoing personality and good verbal communication skills
  • Complete understanding of VisitNorfolk’s Vision and Mission
