The Financial Counselor is responsible for notifying patients of any financial liabilities. This position is temporary lasting 12 weeks from start date.

This position is responsible for verifying insurances and financial counseling for self-pay accounts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Training:
  • High school diploma required. College preferred.

Experience:
  • Experience in a hospital insurance verification/self-pay in business office setting.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintains patient demographic information.
  • Verify insurance eligibility for behavioral health benefits for inpatient, outpatient and observation by utilizing online websites or by contacting the carriers directly.
  • Obtain patient deductibles/coinsurances and/or copays and enter into the billing system.
  • Assist billing staff in understanding carrier websites and verification of eligibility.
  • Verify authorizations if needed.
  • Answers questions from patients, billing staff and insurance companies.
  • Works in conjunction with the billing staff to ensure clean billing.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
  • Work with patients to collect outstanding self-pay balances due on account.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency in the AS400 and Microsoft Windows systems.
  • Ability to handle multiple duties in a fast-paced environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of insurance plans and their benefit requirements.
  • Demonstrated capacity to interact with all levels of staff and/or patient population in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability in the financial area of collection of patient co-pays, negotiation of self-pay situations and appropriate credit card usage.
  • Strong knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures.
  • Possession of strong problem solving skills and sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of verification websites such as Navinet, PEAR, Promise (EVS) etc.
  • Ability to be proactive and take initiative.
  • Exhibit high level of quality through attention to detail and monitoring of work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, as well as exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks, as well as to accept direction on given assignments.

Patients; families; direct-care service providers; external funding sources; service, accreditation, and licensing agencies; external case managers; other staff; and the community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires sufficient body mobility to accomplish essential functions. Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to bend, stoop, and kneel with ease. Requires walking and standing often. Requires frequently speaking on the telephone. Must be able to occasionally lift and carry items up to 50 lbs. Requires normal or corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Able to assist with the restraint of individuals weighing up to 250 pounds. Emotional stability necessary to perform essential functions. Must be able to express and exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Communicating fluently and effectively both verbally and in writing in English. Ability to appropriately interact with all program staff, patients, visitors, attending Physicians, and other department representatives.

  • Work first, second, or third shift or any day of the week
  • Travel by car and/or air

Physical/General:
Environment: Works in well-lighted, well-ventilated area, with high traffic flow of patients, visitors, staff, and others.

Job Hazards:

Employee may be exposed to:
  • Internal/External disasters in which appropriate policies, procedures, and plans must be followed to protect personnel, patients, and staff;
  • Infections/communicable diseases and hazardous/toxic agents.
  • Encounter some chemical listed in the MSDS sheets.
Other: Participates in therapeutic crisis intervention with physically aggressive patients which may involve some personal risk.

This position is susceptible to reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or potential contact with blood or other potentially infectious material that may result from the performance of an employee’s duties or “occupational exposure.” However, all employees have access to the facility’s Exposure Control Plan and MSDS Sheets. Knowledge of appropriate policies, procedures, and plans is required.
EXPOSURE: Category 1-Blood borne disease exposure through contact with contaminated blood and body fluids.
Qualifications:
High school diploma required. College preferred. Experience in a hospital registration/business office setting.
