Job description
This is skilled work in the operation of a wide variety of heavy equipment used in roadway and other municipal utility construction and maintenance work. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the heavy and complex types of construction and maintenance equipment used in more difficult construction and maintenance operations. Employees in this classification may also perform manual tasks related to equipment operation. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through the inspection of work while in progress and upon completion.

- Operates all terrain excavator, vacuum truck, concrete truck, street sweeper, all terrain mower, slope mower, bobcat, and rubber tire backhoe.
- Drives and operates trucks and transports materials needed for projects, and keeps all equipment on trucks in working order.
- May operate excavator in digging ditches, laying pipe and cutting down slopes.
- Performs light maintenance and servicing in connection with the operation of heavy equipment.
- Installs internal point repairs in municipal pipelines.
- Enters confined space structures to perform maintenance on equipment.
- Assist in the use of CCTV to televise sewer main lines and lateral connections.
- Locate sewer main lines, service lines, and force mains using prescribed methods.
- Required to participate in the stand-by/call-out rotation to address problems after normal working hours and on weekends.
- Must be available for emergency call outs
- Requires heavy work that involves lifting, shoveling, stooping, twisting, walking or standing most of the time, much of it on uneven or broken ground, and carrying 35 to 100 pounds on a regular and recurring basis along with exerting up to 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
- Requires entering confined spaces such as manholes, ARV structures, wet wells to perform maintenance on equipment.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position is designated as Mission Critical.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs related work as required.
Qualifications for Equipment Operator I:
High School diploma from an accredited school or its equivalent.- One (1) year of experience in the operation of construction and maintenance equipment and heavy trucks.
- High School diploma from an accredited school or its equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience in the operation of construction and maintenance equipment and heavy trucks including one (1) year of experience in vacuum related trucks.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state of Florida Class “B” commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements as are required by the employing department.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Required to pass and maintain qualifications for:
- Respiratory Protection Physical
- Pulmonary Function
- Qualitative and Quantitative Fit Test(s).
- Must maintain a valid telephone number.
- Must maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
- Considerable knowledge of the general practices applied in the care and safe operation of a wide variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the laws and regulations pertaining to the proper operation of equipment around utilities and upon roads, streets and alleys.
- Skill in the operation of a wide variety of heavy equipment and trucks.
- Ability to operate televising equipment to televise municipal pipelines.
- Ability to maintain and make minor emergency repairs and adjustments to a wide variety of heavy equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions, written instructions and diagrams.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the general public.
- Ability to enter confined spaces such as manholes, ARV structures, wet wells, etc., to perform maintenance on equipment.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Requires heavy work that involves lifting, shoveling, stooping, twisting, walking or standing most of the time, much of it on uneven or broken ground, and carrying 35 to 100 pounds on a regular and recurring basis along with exerting up to 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
- Requires entering confined spaces such as manholes, ARV structures, wet wells to perform maintenance on equipment.
- The job risks exposure to significant environmental hazards including bright/dim light, wet or humid conditions, disease, pathogens, extreme noise levels, traffic, toxic/caustic chemicals, fumes, noxious odors, moving machinery, heights, dusts, pollen, extreme cold and heat.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
