Duties

  • Engineering technicians perform duties in one or more specialty areas of engineering technology such as: Aerospace, Architecture, Materials, or Mechanical.
  • Develops test plans, documents test processes/procedures, evaluates test results and makes necessary design adjustments to achieve desired results
  • Develops detail drawings and, as required, solid models to support detail development.
  • Applies CAD software (Creo Elements/ProE) to tasks that are non-routine, requiring varied approaches learned in previous training to develop the detail drawings.
  • Develops solid models in support of the Centers Digital Transformation initiative to create hardware without drawings or through the use of limited dimension drawings.
  • Work assignments are focused blocks of work, such as a set of detail drawings supporting a larger assembly of a project being led by a senior designer.
  • Analyzes the Product Data Management software to release and change the detail drawings as required.
  • Designs and documents novel test procedures, evaluates test results and makes necessary design adjustments to achieve an operational facility.
  • Prepares engineering evaluation tests of equipment such as prototypes of experimental hardware conceived and designed by engineers.
  • Collaborates with project engineers to determine the methods and techniques that will yield valid test results and establishes procedures and sequences necessary to conduct tests.

Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

To qualify for GS-09, you must have:
a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service that includes
  • Assisting in the development of mechanical and/or structural detail and assembly drawings for hardware;
  • Assisting senior designers and working on large assembly projects;
  • Assisting in creating hardware without drawings or using limited dimension drawings;
OR
b) Completed all requirements for a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in engineering, engineering technology, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics.
OR
c) Completed at least 2 full academic years of graduate education in engineering, engineering technology, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics.
OR
d) An equivalent combination of experience and graduate education

To qualify for GS-10, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service that includes:
  • Participating on a team with detail designers developing solid models leading to the creation of mechanical and/or structural detail and assembly drawings for hardware;
  • Performing testing procedures and evaluating test results of the facility;
  • Participating on the development of solid models in support of the Centers Digital Transformation initiative to create hardware without drawings or using limited dimension drawings.
To qualify for GS-11, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level in the Federal service that includes:
  • Working on a team of detail designers and making recommendation for the development of solid models leading to the creation of drawings for hardware and CAD software;
  • Providing technical guidance on test plans and procedures and performing design adjustments for process improvements to ensure the adequacy of facilities and production materials;
  • Making recommendations on the development of solid models in support of the Centers Digital Transformation initiative to create hardware without drawings and/or using limited dimension drawings.
