Position Overview: Reports to the VP for student life or designee. Oversees and directs the operations of the Student Health Center. Directs and provides routine and specialized nursing care in areas of health screening, health assessment, and treatment using protocols, patient education, triage, and clinical support services for the University community. Promotes health through individual and group education, with programs focusing on health maintenance, response to illness, and injury prevention. Manages budget, oversees international student health insurance, maintains supplies, trains, supervises, and schedules student employees. Develops strong working relationships with university departments, students, and area health facilities and collaborate with contracted physician(s). Supervises unlicensed clinical support staff, performs administration functions, and coordinates nursing clinical actions. Serves as liaison to local, state, and national health and medical agencies; directs and leads the clinic in short- and long-range budget and financial management; and directs and coordinates clinic preparation for and response to critical incidents and public health threats.
Essential job functions:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Oversees and directs the operations of the Health Service in coordination with other department; leads the clinic in a holistic approach to service which incorporates a philosophy of wellness, prevention, and education; provides positive leadership to the clinic and facilitates a healthy work environment for optimal staff performance and service to the campus community; leads the clinic leadership team in short- and long-range planning and progress toward goals; arranges clinic representation on inter/intra-department teams; ensures effective daily flow and coordination of clinic services; and facilitates communication between units in managing the care of shared patients/clients.
- Ensures compliance to health care regulations, including HIPAA and FERPA.
- Provide appropriate nursing care including assessment, triage, and monitoring utilizing standardized practices
- Establishes, implements and maintains department policies, procedures, objectives and major plans for the department in accordance with applicable state law.
- Review health history and immunization information submitted by students, for completeness and request outstanding information.
- Provide campus-wide educational, screening and immunization programs.
- Schedules appointments and follow up visits.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client health service records
- Coordinates with physicians for consultations.
- Purchase and stock medications and supplies.
- Administer over the counter medications and other forms of treatment.
- Performs and monitor clinical testing.
- Manage sterile processes and infection control.
- Provides individual preventive health care through immunization programs, tuberculosis screening, sexual and general health education and health counseling.
- Completes physical assessments, providing treatment or referral as appropriate, working closely with the consulting physicians.
- Track visits and prepares reports and statistics reflecting department activities.
- Attend University events required as medical provider (i.e. Graduation, Homecoming, FY move-in day).
- Coordinate campus disaster plan related to health issues. Directs clinic outreach, education, and public relations to students, parents, and the campus community; identifies critical health issues for educational campaigns.
- Act as liaison with the university community, public health agencies, and hospitals as needed for Student Health Center issues.
- Administers international student health insurance.
- Recruits, orients, and supervises student health assistants and administrative assistant.
- Supervise all Health Service employees including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning and directing work, coaching, appraising performance, rewarding and corrective action for employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
- Provides health education and health promotion activities through individual and group consultation, seminars, presentations, health fairs, media and printed resources. Activities focus on health maintenance, illness prevention, and injury prevention.
- Collaborates closely with the Wellness Committee, student life, and other campus departments to address student health needs.
- Administers department budget and allocates resources.
- Remains current in CPR, First Aid, AED, university health and primary care.
- Provide classes in Bloodborne Pathogen to appropriate employees.
- Maintain all records of prior classes.
- Provide initial evaluation for Worker Compensation injuries.
- Refer as need to appropriate facility.
- Maintain records and report to EMAS for Safety Committee subgroup.
- Assures healthy campus community.
- Serve on the following committees: -EMAS Safety Committee, ESA Committee, Drug and Alcohol Committee, Food Exempt Committee, and Wellness Committee.
- Serve as a Preceptor for the Athletic Training Department
- Provide compliance advice regarding OSHA regulations and OSHA certified, preferred but not required.
Secondary Job Functions
- Maintains first aid kits.
- Maintains AEDs.
- Assures adequate hand hygiene program and facilities.

Qualifications:
- A commitment to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion among students, faculty, and staff.
- Associates Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
- Possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Indiana.
- Possession of current CPR/AED/First Aid certification.
- Five years of clinic experience.
- Strong assessment and triage skills.
- Ability to analyze emergency situation and to take prompt action.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise the work of others.
- Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of medical terminology and equipment; thorough knowledge of uses and effects of medicines.
- Previous college health, public health, emergency room nursing experience or other nursing triage work experience desirable.
- Ability to apply nursing knowledge and techniques; ability to observe and record or respond with therapy to reaction, symptoms, and behaviors; ability to keep records and prepare reports.
- Basic computer knowledge. Knowledgeable of Windows programs such as Word and Excel.
- Willing to be on-call for emergency consultation.
- Be proficient in administering over the counter medications, giving injections, and performing tests.
- Have a professional demeanor, which inspires confidence and projects credibility.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- An understanding of and commitment to college health, service, and an educational mission.

Work schedule: This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Forty (40) hours per week (8:00 am-5:00 pm) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the College, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be required occasionally.
